Smile I've got a question.....

If offered a safe place to street race, do you think people would still continue to street race illegaly?

Also why do YOU street race, if you do?

a safe place? you mean like at a race track?

people still race illegally even though there are race tracks all over the country. Problem is, there isnt many tracks to make it convienent... and they're usually placed out in the boondocks so its a slight pain to get to them.

Yea, and most tracks only have like 3 days open for dragging. And if you wanted to get on the track any other day it costs big money.

The local track here has adopted a midnight drag program. On certain friday nights, they have drags. This is good. But, with only 300 slots available, and over 1500 people wanting to race. It just doesnt work out.

yes

People would still street race, even if it was open every day. It's like this, you have a fast car and someone pulls up next to you with what looks like a fast car. You just want to race right then and there, fuck going to the track right then you'd probably have to wait in line. So yeah it would still happen.

I agree with the concensus of the thread. As long as someone thinks they're tough on the street, and you think you can take them, there will still be street racing. It's part adrenaline, part pride. Neither of those factors will wait for a trip to the track. Going to the track proves just how good of a driver you are.

Yup. If somebody pulls up to me revving his engine, I'm not gonna say "no not here. lets drive an hour to the track". Organized racing is a little better cuz the bitches typically can't drive off w\o paying cuz a moderator holds the $. That's the only reason I'd take it to the track. but the nearest drag track is in Kansas City, 2 hours away.

We get a lot of illegal organised street drags over here in NZ. They meet up at a certain point every Saturday night (spot changes depending on whether the police have been tipped off or not). If there were a place specifically built for racing that was free to enter and didn’t have to be booked in advance I’m sure it would cut out a lot of that sort of racing. What it wouldn’t cut out would be the sort of situations where someone pulls up to you at a set of lights (like DeViL said).

This is a bogus question because no "safe place" would ever be offered! Just like skate parks, cities frown upon catering to fringe groups like performance car enthusiasts. Who would insure these places? Its just too difficult a project for officials, police, insurance, etc. to even think about... so they try to eliminate the behavior alltogether.

Not totally true. The Mayor of Christchurch is thinking of building a drag strip out of the main part of town that street racers will be able to go to. By doing this he figures that it will cut out the drag racing/burn out comps that go on at the moment. Considering that a lot of the street racers drive about the same amount of time to get into town he figures that they would then drive the same amount of time to get to the drag strip. Hopefully it will go ahead and become a success and then other cities might think about doing the same thing instead of trying to stop it all together.

Sorry Spec, I always forget that this forum is international, and that oficial's attitudes vary greatly from country to country. I hope the idea works, and that our country & state officials take notice.

We're hoping too. It would be great to have one in Auckland. The nearest drag strip is about an hour away and you have to pay and book that one.

My friend that used to live in New Zeland says that cops will stop chasing you after a while if you keep running... is that true?

........

Supposedly it is, the highspeed chases get too dangerous and the cops don't want to put people in danger swerving around them. They may stop but you damn well better believe they aren't finished with you. I'd say they will get helicopters and stuff to tract you down instead.
