i'm playing with the idea of using a red to blue chameleon paint on, say, an r34 or gt3. has anyone used it before on a model? wondering how the finish turned out/lasted? i know it's pricey but i think it'd make for an outstanding kit!

I've always liked the Chameleon paint. How much does it cost to do it?

I've used it on a Corvette Spyder model. The brand I used is PPG Harlequin, similar shade to that Miata.
Yeah, it's expensive and I'm kind of over the chameleon paint effect, but it is incredibly easy to apply. You start with a black undercoat, which can simply be black primer. Then you thin the chameleon paint and apply a few thin coats over the black, then clearcoat. It's one of the easiest paint jobs I have ever done. The PPG stuff looks a LOT better than the Alclad chameleon stuff. The pigments in the Alclad are too big. I used this as an excuse to photograph the Spyder: ![]() The effect is spectacular in certain light. You can see about 5 or 6 colors, ranging from gold, rootbeer, sapphire blue, maroon, purple, and everthing in between. This particular shade is blue-red.

Hey, Celica Chick...

You can get the Aclad stuff at hobby shops like AAA Hobbies in Marietta, it's about $9 for a bottle. You need an airbrush to apply these paints. Quote:

You can go the route others have stated which is Black Gold. They sell House of Kolors Chameleon paints in 1oz bottles. A little pricey, but youll get alot better results than the Dupli Color chameleon sets which are really cheap. Now if its high quality youre looking for, I agree with ZoomZoomMX5, you can either go with PPG or Dupont...they offer the most amazing range of Chameleon colors. But look to spend alot of $$$ ofcourse.
heres a spy shot of my girlfriends 97 Accord. Dupont Chromalusion Blue Steel Prizmtone - A blue to red chameleon like you were looking for. The color made its debut on Jeff Gordon's Superman No. 24 NASCAR Winston Cup Monte Carlo at The Winston race in Charlotte, N. C. on May 22 either 2001 or 02. Im not a NASCAR fan but I thought that was some cool info. It was about $400 a pint. It has not been color sanded or polished n buffed in this pic. Celica Chick: Im pretty sure I saw a silver to blue chamleon, but I forgot who made it. its either Dupont, PPG, or HOK.

Re: chameleon paint
I've used some stuff by a company called Spazstix, it is designed for RC bodies but if you paint the model black first, then apply the chameleon paint, then seal it in with some Tamiya clear it works a treat, I'll try and dig up a picture of the model I used it on, in fact I think it's a thread on here.
OK, I just dug up the thread, here it is.. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=198642 The pics aren't great but you get the idea.
