Tamiya re releases?

Hi

Just saw that Tamiya is re releasing all the Mclaren's they produced in the past. I thought there were licencing issues here? Irritates me because 2 months ago I paid a fortune to get the MP4/4, MP4/5B, MP4/6.......

yeah, I just went through the same thing paying $60 for a 79 Ford pickup, and then they re-released them (through model king, I believe) and selling them for like $20 or something

Re: Tamiya re releases?

Maybe the license issues have been temporarily resolved. Maybe they've been permanently resolved. Maybe we'll soon see Tamiya do a 1/24 McLaren F1 now. Or maybe this is simply Tamiya's last hurrah before they cease production of all 1/20 F1 kits altogether. Who's to say? It sucks to take a beating on ebay when a few months later kits get rereleased- but it's great for the rest of us who don't have them and want them.

But this is why I laugh whenever someone says they're going to hold onto a kit because someday it might be worth something....

Re: Tamiya re releases?

I agree MWPR. I buy kits to build them. No other reason at all. Its just a pity that I only found out now about these kits. But the good news is (and I didn't know this either) that other older kits are being re released.

There may have been licensing issues, but I think Tamiya must have resolved them due to their release of the 1/24th Mercedes McLaren SLR kit recently.

In the thread Freakray attached the link to. Phill asked about the M23 kits and if tamiya will be re-releaseing them. He also eluded to the "cloke and dagger" type release method used by Tamiya to re-release these kits as "black" or "white" box releases only in Japan. To this I can only offer that Tamiya had no license to re-release these kits back then and resorted to the plane rap method in an effort to get something out to the masses. Now with the new licenseing that must be in place we can all only hope that Tamiya will do a proper re-release of the M23 kits as well. You can bet though there will be no tobacco decals in them.

To the rest, it has been my experiance that Tamiya does re-release there best selling kits on somewhat of a cyclic bases and would suggest if there is something in perticular that you are looking for, to write Tamiya and express your desire to see it re-released.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the M23's

Re: Tamiya re releases?

Tamiya's license on McLaren kits is always temporary. When I asked about this, a Tamiya rep told me that it's because a certain someone got stubborn, but he didn't elaborate. Those kits were reissued before, and this time is no different. As for the SLR, it's a Mercedes product so McLaren isn't involved (or I should say the McLaren license is included in the Mercedes license, and it's managed by Mercedes.)
