white or gray?

hi everybody,i'm about to pant my oldsmoble nascars in tamiya camel yellow. this is scary because i have never primed a kit body before. i was wondering what primer to use. i was thinking white, but i'm not sure. i thought that grey would come through under the camel yellow, but i've never done this before. i don't know whitch primers to use under what colors.

Both. Lay a couple of decent coats of grey primer--use it to find problems in the body, things that still need to be puttied or sanded etc... once you're done all that stuff, lay one more light coat of gray, and then a couple of good coats of white primer. Yellow most definitely will not cover grey primer easily. A good rule of thumb that lots of guys here follow is to use white primer as your final primer coat on anything except the odd black or dark blue colour ,that sort of thing.

So where can you get white primer? I use PlastiKote, which is rust-colored. I have never found white primer anywhere.

Tamiya sells it, as does Dupli-color. I don't recall if Testors does.

for nascar, and other really brightly colored cars, I like to use bright colors like silver, and gold of various tints (graphite, gunmetal, silver, bronze, copper, aluminum etc.) it really tends to make the color pop. it may not be correct for your application, I just thought I'd share.

Gunze also has a 1000 grit sandable white primer in a bottle. Tamiya's stuff is too air-y for me...even when decanted...

You could make up a couple of test pieces from scrap plastic or cardboard and try out the white and gray to see how the yellow looks over each.

I'll also use the gray primer to do my body work with a cheaper Plastikote primer and then use Duplicolor for the finish work right before the final painting.
