98 Ford Taurus Transmission

My 98 Ford Taurus 3.0 Duratec 4V w/ a AX4N Transmission is having this kind of problems: service engine light on all the time, O/D(overdrive) switch continously flashing, zero reading on the speedometer when running, the gear stuck in the first gear and won't shift. Owner manual says problem with the transaxle electronic system due to the O/D swicth continously blinking and cannot be turn off.
One expert told me the problem is the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). Anyone have experienced this problem before? any body there who can help? also, is there a cable for the speedometer or the vss act as one by sending signel to the mecanical counter in the odometer? Thanks in advance.

By the symptoms you are describing, most like the culprit is the VSS.
It is located on the transmission closer to the right wheel if I am not mistaken. You will need a lift to do this repair. You can try from the ground, but I wouldn't.

Good luck

How do you remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor from the Transaxle? I already removed the retainer and the hold down bolt but the VSS still won't budge. I try pulling it by hand from the top side to no avail and I am afraid to use excessive force. Do you have any ideas? thanks in advance.

Pulling out the VSS is just that. There is an oring on the VSSsensor which holds it in place pretty tightly. Go ahead and pull it out. Sometimes wiggling it and twisting breaks the seal and it will come out. Some force will be necessary for it to come out though.
