1998 ford taurus transmission

1998 ford taurus transmission slips and will not go into 2nd gear when first started or cold. During cold days car must run for 15 minutes to get the car to accelerate. But when driving it has trouble going into gear. Car has 130000 onit. Some tell me the pump is shot, i do not know how to check that! Any ideas?
