Nitrous additive...

A guy I know just bought a 91 Firebird Formula, but that has nothing to do with anything at the moment. Anyways, I was talking to him about it and he mentioned that he was going to try this thing that he saw at Pep Boys, a nitrous additive for your gas. I guess my main question is, do these do anything? I just couldn't see it doing too much, if anything at all.

define "better gas." correct me if i'm wrong, but the difference between unleaded and premium and all high octanes is prevention of detonation. So if you have a compression ratio of 11:1 you'd definently need premium gas and some retardation of the time as well.

The point of octane boosters is boosting already high-octane fuels(premium) to yield better timing. The highest octane typical gas stations provide is ~94 octane, with the booster, u can get 100+. Obviously, there are some gas stations that sell 100+ octane(race fuel) anyway..

From what I've learned, most octane boosters, contain alkyl lead and oxygenates. Oxygenates decreases knocking at the low temperature, while the alkyl lead does so in the intermediate temperature range.

And to add to my previous post, the "Octane" number u see at gas stations is actually the Anti-Knock Index(AKI), the average of two methods of testing the octane level, RON and MON.

Japan's Premium, Gold, or whatever you want to call it is like 100 I think.
Yes the Octane booster is sold by NOS but of couse it's also sold by other brands and I believe its supposed to increase you octane by so much or is it to make the octane more efficient?
Anyway the Octoane booster I think is just to further prevent detonation.

Yes... I know certain gas stations sell 100+ octane(race gas)... but i said "TYPICAL" gas stations, meaning most normal ones...

I haven't used 'em before, but i say they'll probably boost a certain value... depending on the original octane value of the gas... I doubt anyone would bother putting octane booster in Regular gas

The octane booster might not help on daily driving though.
But I think if you want to use it at the track then yup I think it'll help.
It'll help on track because then you are going to push your engine harder causing more heat.
So you might actually end up needing the octane booster to prevent knocking.

i'm not sure if a lot of cars need it for daily driving but i know that if you have a JDM motor, the octane booster will make your car run a bit better since japan has access to 100 octane from the pump

It will help on the JDM cars.
In Japan if you buy a RSX Type R (DC-5).
They actually recommend the 100 octane.
