Help me choose a new color for my Carrera GT!
Well, after realizing that I have some crazing on my Fiji Blue Carrera GT, I've decided to dunk and strip. And the two colors that I have currently are very special: Devil's Venom and Sea Serpent, the two Cobra Color's Limited Editions.
So, which do I use? Here are the descriptions of the colors, in case you didn't pick up a bottle, along with a picture of the two bottles, all shaken and mixed. Sea Serpent - An emerald green base laden with sparkling green & gold pearls and a tint of candy teal blend together to produce this incredibly deep, rich finish! Devil's Venom - Once a nickname for a dangerously volatile rocket fuel, "Devil's Venom" aptly describes the fiery explosion of color in this spectacular blazing red-orange pearl finish!

Re: Help me choose a new color for my Carrera GT!
Did the paint crazing effect the underlying plastic?
Choosing a paint color may be meaningless if the paint crazing went right down to the plastic and wasn't just a reaction between the primer and color coats.

I'd go for the Sea Serpent; I've seen both sprayed and the Devil's Venom just didn't pop like I expected. Looked more like a coppery brown (w/o clear it also looks a lot like red oxide primer); but it wasn't clearcoated. It was not flattering the Murcielago roadster it was sprayed on at all. The Sea Serpent is amazing.

I say do it in Fayence Yellow!
It looks awesome on the CGT, and almost no one has done it in this color. CobraColors will be carrying it starting July first. But before you do anything, make sure you have your crazing problem fixed first! What did you prime with, and what did you thin with?

It was primed in Black Magic, no thinner. I think it was just my spraying technique, coupled with my semi-bad location. So I'm get the VX Sealer before I spray these next colors.

Re: Help me choose a new color for my Carrera GT!
I've sprayed both of those colors on cars recently, and I honestly don't think either would be a good Carrera GT color.
But, if those are your only choices then Sea Serpent would be the better of the two. I don't have a pic of the Devils Venom, and have stripped it off of my Murcielago Roadster because it too reacted with the Moon Mud primer I sprayed it on. It looked like metallic red oxide primer as Zoom mentioned above. It's a nice unique color, it just looked off on a supercar. It would be right at home on a tuner, or classic car. But here is a shot of Sea Serpent, and it's color changing ability. ![]()

Between those, the green one would look better for me.
But I agree with MPWR, fayence gelb is great. |

That color if terrific MPWR, can't wait to get this from CobraColors. Too bad I have to wait until next winter because I live in Canada :-(

Re: Help me choose a new color for my Carrera GT!
Okay, well, since neither of the other colors people think will look good, what about the current color? I just have a few questions about the current paint job.
First, is this orange peel or crazing? Second, if it's orange peel, could I just sand it off with high-grit paper, and if so, what's the best way to do that before spraying a little bit more blue on it? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Help me choose a new color for my Carrera GT!
Looks like orange peel to me, but the photos make it hard to discern which it really is.

Re: Help me choose a new color for my Carrera GT!
I have to say I like the current color better than the other two for that car as well.
To me, that looks to be orange peel and not crazing, although the seam line on the left front fender is visibly etched. You can sand the orange peel off, but to rid yourself of the etching problem the entire car should be stripped and primed again before painting. Sanding and applying more paint over the current paint won't mask it. If you repaint it with the same paint, try adding a bit more thinner and apply the coats more gradually. Applying the paint coats too fast and too heavy increases your chances of etching the surface. Matt, awesome job on the 'Cuda! |
