WIP; Lancia Delta S4 86 TDC, Toivonen

I decided to start a thread on this one now I have gotten a little way into this build. This is a transkit for the Lancia 037 kit from Hasegawa. The transkit gives you a body, interior tub, engines parts, wheels, tyres, decals for Martini and Totip cars, vac formed screen and smoked plastic for the side and rear screens. Some scratchbuilding is required by the modeler, but this is limited to minor parts. The rest is from the 037 kit.

This year is the 20th anniversary since Toivonen and his co-driver Sergio Cresto died competing on the 86 Tour De Corse. His death brought forward the demise of Grp B rally cars. They were simply too fast and coupled with over enthusiastic spectators and poor crowd control by organisers, Grp B was banned for the 1987 season. As a young man I was blown away by these flame spitting 600BHP monsters. I still am today.

The bodyshell was cleaned up, sprayed with Halfords Appliance gloss white and polished. The panel lines are quite shallow on the shell, so I blackened them before the clear goes on, otherwise I may have a problem later on. I applied the Martini decals today. These will be left to fully dry for the week. Next weekend I will apply the clear. With the aide of bluetack I have cobbled it together for these pics!

I scratchbuilt the rear spoiler from the resin centre piece contained in the kit and plastic card. I based the design on some refs I have of an S4 that I took at Goodwood Festival of Speed last year. The design appears to have changed frequently as the car was developed. Here it is bluetack into place. Once painted up black, decalled and some photoetch boltheads on, it should look the part.

I'm dovetailing this build with the Rossi Corolla, so updates will be sporadic!! Comments are very welcome!

Re: WIP; Lancia Delta S4 86 TDC, Toivonen

This will be an interesting thread of an interesting subject. I also have Ken's transkit and those panel lines are very shallow indeed, but I think he warned about it somewhere in the instructions or on his webpage. My solution was to scribe all the lines deeper with 0.15mm etched saw blades.

I'm still pondering whether I'll build mine as the victorious Monte Carlo car or the tragic TdC version. The Monte car would allow the nice rear wheels to be shown without the carbon shields and maybe I could build the auxliary headlights from scratch too. I think the extra light pods might give more character to the nose.

By the way, are decals easy to use or do they need any special tricks? I have never used ALPS printed decals and I would like to know if there is anything out of ordinary when using those.

Maybe I'll do a WIP thread of my model too, although my building pace is quite slow. I'm just cleaning up the parts right now and the body has got its first coat of primer.

Re: WIP; Lancia Delta S4 86 TDC, Toivonen

The decals you see are very easy to use - I left them in water for a minute or two - they need some gentle persuasion to release from the backing. I used very little sovent to get them to lay down nice. no problems.

I wished I'd have rescribed some of the lines. I realised this once I had the paint on
I'll look forward to your thread. I don't build quick either and I'll take one step at a time to get things right (apart from the panels lines that is!)

I am looking VERY forward to how this turns out. Still hitting myself in the head for not buying one of them. So far the body looks very clean, just perfect for the car! One small point of attention maybe, when doing the panellines you missed the upper door frame....

You can find several reference pics of S4 at classic rally models page.

This is.....wow....my favorite car, I wanted to ask Ken about TK but I will just wait a bit to see how will Profil24 one look like.

In any case, can't wait to see more.

The upper part of the door frame will be black for the TDC version, so I have left this until after the clearcoats.

Thanks guys.

Fabulous car and a real hero of mine. I have the Toivenan Story video, really sad but excellent footage including his times at the top in a Sunbeam, then with Opel and finally Lancia.

Looking forward to further progress.

Re: WIP; Lancia Delta S4 86 TDC, Toivonen

Wow, how did I miss this thead earlier? Looking extremely nice so far, although the panel lines seem a but too dark for my taste. But that is always a problem to balance with a white car.

Perhaps we should be a bit more discreet with the origins of this transkit given the makers wishes?

Thanks for your comment. I have tried to replicate the panel lines as it looks on the real car. Some panels are very flush and are barely visible until your right up to the thing. Others like the door have large gaps. The lines I have done are the points at which the body panels separate. Also, they should blend in better when the rest of the decals are on - looks a bit stark at the moment.

Here's a pic showing the black window surround ( to answer an earlier question) and check out the gap from the door to the wing.

Re: WIP; Lancia Delta S4 86 TDC, Toivonen

I agree with you on the panel line subject. They always tend to look overdone on a white car when it is bare. However when all the decals and such are in place they tend to tone down.I think this is because your eye has something else to be drawn to and the panel lines are then less noticable.Your model is coming along very well indeed,I am following this build as I also have one on my to do list.I was hoping to make the victorious 1985 Rac Rally winner but I'm not sure if the rear wheels were different to the Tour de Corse version.I know they never had the covers over them. Also not sure if the Rac version had the smoked windows. If anyone can shed any light on this please let me know.Keep up the good work on your model.
