Does a 1998 Honda Civic EX 2 door 5 speed manual 1.6 liter have VTEC engine

why doesn't it say VTEC on the engine or anywhere on the car

Because they're ghey.

Look at engine code on the transmission next your header, it'll say D16Y8 on it. That means it's a D-series 1.6 liter engine with a Y8 head on it. A Y8 head is a Vtec enabled cylinder head.

Next to the distributor, there should be a little brass colored circular thing. This is the Vtec solenoid.

Get in the car, start it and floor it. When the engine passes 5500 rpm, this HUGE onslaught of power will come roaring thru the engine, like two rocket boosters blasting off behind you. This is Vtec engaging

I have a D16Y8 and you cant feel the vtec so much as you can hear it. If you install an intake (I have a Cold Air) you can hear it much better. Also, on the stock ecu vtec wont engage in idle. You must be moving above 15mph and the car must be warm and you must have a full tank of oil.
