vtec question

If I swapped in a z6 or a y8 but did not connect the vtec right away (due to lack of funds and time) would I still be able to drive it in the meantime? What effect, if any would it have on the motor??

I have heard that your car will still run better with the v-tec head than with the regular head. dunno why, but a couple of people have told me that...

the couple of people are wrong. the VTEC cam is set for different powerband than the non VTEC cam. If you try to run your VTEC cam without engaging VTEC, you will fall flat on your face after about 5000 rpm or so, whereas the non VTEC cam is designed to pull up to around 6500.

It wont hurt the engine to run it without VTEC hooked up, however my advice is that you dont rev it past 5500 rpm or so because there is no reason.. might as well not cause unecessary wear to the engine.

Ok great,

I was worried because when I do the swap, I do not know if I will have the new ecu in hand, or time or $$ to setup the vtec so until I do, I would be rolling without it.

Just wanted to be sure I wouldn't hurt the engine in the meantime,

Thanks!

Just curious....would a z6 or y8 without the vtec hooked up perform like the y7 ?? Or would it have more off the bat than the y7 ? Just wondering if the vtec gives it that extra 20hp or if the engines are that much better from the start?
