Unhappy New owner with reverse gear problem

Just bought a 3000GT Twin Turbo but I can't quite tell if there is a gearbox problem. As we know, the reverse gear is near the 6th and is understandable tricky to get to reduce the likelyhood of reverse being engaged at high speed.

But, there are times when I can select reverse 50 times in a row and times when it is more like 3 times in 30 minutes. When I take it to the garage where I bought it from the reverse is easily selectable and they say there is nothing wrong with it. However, just when I think I have got this reverse gear selection business sussed, it seems to have disappeared off the planet! I have started to notice that this mainly occurs after an hours drive.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Is this problem fairly common or am I just a flash bastard who can't change gear for toffee!

Are you sure you're going into neutral beforehand?

Thanks, for you reply "UncleMeat777",

I can't remember when I posted the original message. It must be 2 weeks now. I been having password problems which have only now been fixed by the AF Team.

In reply to your message the gear stick has definately been placed in netural before attempting to get reverse. I have been trying for weeks to convince the garage I have bought this car from that there is a fault. My friends have tried reverse when the car is playing up, my Dad, my neighbour and my cousin could not get it. Apparently the garage says they have no trouble with it.

This garage is by the way Sanderson Motorhouse and owned by CD Bramel. I have heard from multiple sources that they are extremely arkward fixing faults from cars bought off them.

I will be getting a second opinion of the Mitsubishi garage soon on the matter.

I have been having the same problem with My 97 VR-4 since it was new. Sometimes it just will not go into reverse. I have had it serviced many times by private mechanics and Mitsubishi and never had anyone who could explain or fix it. It always comes back, now more frequently (twice in 1 week). Before it would be sevral weeks or months between events. Somebody must have some idea what causes the problem somewhere. Let me know if you find that person

Re: New owner with reverse gear problem

it's nothing bad my car does the same thing. It's just what you get because the mitsubishi trans is not very good but a good way to deal with it is when u cant get it into reverse just start in first and go throug all the gears and it usualy fixes the problem if not just do it once or twice and the reverse should free up. It's nothing bad i had it checked out with mitsubishi and they said it's typical of the transmission to do that.

Re: New owner with reverse gear problem

Yeah mine has a hard time getting into reverse/1st, more in the winter months after a colder night, but it happens occasionally. One thing that helped was changing the gear oil in the drivetrain. They have directions on www.stealth316.com. It took me very little time to do, the instructions were easy, so you may want to consider that. I used the synchromesh that he describes on the instructions in my transfer case and transaxle, and used mobil 1 75w90 in the rear differential. I took it out right afterwards and noticed significantly smoother shifting. Hope that helps.

Well, I'm having a reverse problem myself now after a new clutch. This is what i learned after taking it in today. Apparantly there are brushels that do something for the reverse gear and if it's worn down the gear gets hard to be put in. However, I was told that if you just take it to the mitsubishi dealer, they can fix it easily and it should be cheap. It's just a small plastic thing that allows the car to go into reverse. It's in the engine underneath the y-pipe hoses. Hopefully this may help some people in the future as well.

Re: New owner with reverse gear problem

I wish I had that problem cuz then I'd have a VR4,ha. I have a 96SL and now I have to use blunt force to get in reverse, but that's what you get buying used trans. So I'm wondering how long before it goes completely out or if it will remain this way. I'm getting pretty frustrated now, I love my car but I love money too. Let's see if I would have keep the cash I bought the car for, plus the money I spent on getting repairs that would equal VR4, DAMN.

The mistake i made when buying my 99 sl (not really a mistake, great car) was that i didn't know much about 3000gts when i was getting one and if i would have known the different models...vr4 would have just been purchased from the beginning. I could have saved a lot of money instead of switching cars after the first year. That gets expensive but it's funny cuzz my friends compared it to getting new shoes and they think i'm gonna get something else in the next year. YAH RIGHT.

i have a n/a 5spd and i too have problems with reverse sometimes. i found that if u hold the clutch in, put it in first, then go to reverse it goes in easy. i saw someone posted up there to go through all the gears. why dont u guys try 1st then reverse and see if that works for u too.

I did forget to mention. In my sl that i had, if i put it in reverse and got a grinding noise from it...i had to throw it in first give it a little gas forward then drop it back to reverse and it worked fine. That happened about 50% of the time.
