I've heard only good things about Redline, and I plan on testing it in my car at some point next month.

DON'T PUT STANDARD GEAR BOX OIL IN A MANUAL HONDA GEAR BOX!!!!
EVER! They are designed to run on engine weight oil, and will rapidly run bearings and syncrhos if you use a 90w Gear oil. Honda sell's a really good oil that is the perfect weight for all Honda manual boxs. And I personaly will not use anything else in my G.box. (espcialy after just replacing 3rd gear thanks to the dealer I bought the car off useing a 90w gear oil). However if you want to be cheap or own an older Honda then useing a 20w50 should not do any harm, and is the oil recomended in the 3g Civic service book I have at work. Now about the Redline. Its an awsome product! I have used it in my old Triumph and it ran perfectly. I also used the Diff oil and its very popular here with most race car owners. I do believe they make an oil that is suitable for Honda g/boxs. But the only way to find out would be to ring or email redline and ask them. Tell them you have a Honda and you want to try some of thier product in your car, and that it will not work with a 90w gear oil. See what they recomend, I have heard they are pretty onto it, and I believe have an oil that is suitable.

I'm with moppie on this one - I use Honda tranny oil 'cause I've seen too many 1G gearboxes screw up with regular tranny oil. I spend the extra money and use the Honda stuff in my SiR just for peace of mind

Well i asked the shop when he brought out 2 different kinds of redline. He asked me which one u want? I was all confused. Then said what car u have? I told him i have a b16 crx. So he pulled out the MT-90 and said here that is what i used. SO ...?

So?
It dosnt mean the guy in the shop knew what he was talking about. Fuck Iv been buying car parts and working in workshops for about 7 years know and I have seen some really stupid people who have no idea what thier talking about sell parts. Infact unless I know the guy in the shop I generaly just grab the parts book and tell him the part numbers to go find. Ring Redline and tell them you have a Honda and ask if they have a manual gear box oil that is suitable. i.e. its not a 90w gear oil.

i got a reply

Date: 5/30/02 4:19:59 PM Pacific Daylight Time From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent from the Internet (Details) >I just purchased three bottles of redline transimission fluid for my honda >crx. I did an engine transplant which is called b16. I bought the MT-90 >redline tranny fluid. My question is , is it safe for me to use that? Thank >you for your time. It is safe to use the MT-90 in your transaxle, but it is a higher viscosity than called for, I would recommend the MTL. The MTL is the viscosity called for the higher viscosity MT-90 likely would be stiffer shifting when cold. Thank you for your interest in Red Line Oil. |

That was thier answer?
My god. The last sentance dosnt even make a lot of sense, looks like someones 5yr old son got hold of the comp and did the reply. Based on that I wouldnt use the redline. It shows total ignorance to the lubrication requirments of a Honda G/box. I might try and send them an email and see what they say.

Well I checked the redline site and they have the MTL fuild sort of recomended by your email.
Quote:
Its the closest they have to an engine weight gear oil, but is a little on the thin side according to the Honda book at work. (a 20W-50 is recomended). So I think it will work, and I know Iv seen others who do know more about oil's than I do recomend it, and use it. However, whether you use it is really totaly up to you. I really cant tell you if it will or will not work. Ill ask the Honda tech if I get a chance for his opinion, but I have a funny feeling he will say just use the Honda stuff, and considering the reply above, I would have to agree with him.

I thought I should post the other side of the Tranny fluid story. Many people who experience ANY sort of problem (grinds, etc..) with their tranny should NOT move to redline fluid. Yes, it may seem to "fix" the problem but in reality it's only masking it and the problem slowly gets worse over time. If you look at most racers running in the 10sec+ 1/4mile ET, what do they run? Honda MTF! The only ones that really run the Redline fluid are those that are sponsored by Redline and those that do a rebuild after almost every run.
In Honda's/Acura's, Redline likes to wear down the syncros faster. Yes, it may be more lubricating but that's not always the best. Even if your tranny shows no signs or wear or problems I'd still stick clear of Redline. Honda invested a lot of money in their fluids and parts. It's an awesome product at a great price! If you want to know more, I can get more details. HTH
