Mica Blue over semi gloss black??
Could you use a semi gloss black base on a car body and then apply Tamiya Mica Blue over the top? Just something I was thinking about today after I saw a car today with a blue paintjob with what looked like black in it…
Was thinking how best to replicate it for future usage, as I bet that would look cool on some cars.. Anyone ever done that before? If so did it work? |

Yes. I did that on my Shelby
![]() Note: The clear coat is Testor, so it has a little Yellow tint. Also, from the picture, you could think there is some paint run around the fenders, but it's just reflexion.. I think I did a "too shinny job" that time ![]() But that give you the idea of the color. Darker than Mica Blue, but Brighter than Telephonica Blue

Ah yes it does work.. That looks great, and I knew I had seen this before, BMOM..!!! There was a car in the car park today with almost the same colour.. Looks great.
I'll add this to the never ending list of little things I find out.. Superb. What kit is that? Looks very good.. Fujimi, heard that kit was a bit naff.. If it is, superb job.. |

It's the latest Revell Shelby kit.. Worth about 12$. Fun kit for the price.

Accurate Miniatures just announced that they're doing FIA 289 and USRRC Cobra 289's sometime in the next year (they're also doing a pair of Grand Sport roadsters). Maybe they'll be able to better the Monogram 427, but they're different cars anyway...should be really nice models.

Re: Mica Blue over semi gloss black??
The only problem I had with my cobra was the drive shaft being too long by like 2mm. That's a beautiful color and will look awesome on nearly anything.

Re: Mica Blue over semi gloss black??
I used Glossy Black.
Gloss, Semi-Gloss or flat, for a base coat it won't change anything. Mica Blue is a bit translucent color, so if you want to darker it, any black will do the work. Black is Black...

I've just had a go at this, and my results were superb. Grey primer, satin black, and then mica blue.
But, I could only apply a few mists of blue, as it went blue and dark VERY quick. Normally I apply three mists, and two wet of Mica Blue to get the gloss up.. Sadly no gloss.. Like a flat metallic.. So, it needs clear.. But yeah it works fine, but it does need a clear to get a gloss shine, as without it the paint looks dull, but wonderful colour.. Recommend anyone to try it, as it does work. I used standard satin black auto paint, from Halfords and it worked a treat. Now, need to find a model suitable to do this for a real..!! |
