Question S14 or S15 SR20DET ?

I am going to be getting a 95 or 96 240sx, and i am planning on getting the sr20det. the only problem is i cant decide between the s14 and the s15. the s14 has a larger aftermarket support, but the s15 has the 6spd tranny with higher HP than the s14. any comments? advice? thanks in advance guys.

well I think money wood be a point to talk about as for a S15 engine you'd have to pay about 5500 US$ for S14 much les like ~3000US$. If you put the S14 engine in you wont have VVT but money left to make a S15 front end conversion.
I'm pondering quite about the same problem with the only difference that your 240SX(coupe) is called here 200SX(coupe) and already comes with the S14 SR20DET.

the S14's have VVT. the S15 is theSame as S14 except with Inco turbine wheel, cast divider wall between turbine discharge and wastegate. also has larger injectors. and the obvious 6spd tranny.

stock vs. stock the S15 motor is slightly better. but if you are going to tune the engine the S15 motor has no real advantages over the S14 or even the S13 motors. i was looking into purchasing an s15 motor but what i found was that the s15 tranny is much weaker than the previous gens, and about twice as expensive on parts as an S14 SR20DET. if you tune the engine heavily the VVT will most likely go out the door anyhow. the S13 and S14 motors can equal the S15 motor in performance no problem, so unless you want the bragging rights i would say go for a cheaper motor.

S15 has a bit more power...but other then that, there's not really that much about it that you should spend so much more money to get one. i say go for an S14 motor as it cost's spades less and does the same job without much lacking compared to the S15 engine.

you can get the cheaper s-13 sr20det red top motor,
its is cheaper like 2500 n it takes well to mods, i would go with the s-13 sr20det it you plan to modify the motor but if u plan to keep it stock then go with the s-14 sr20det, i think that the s-15 sr20det motor is over priced n with a simple intake and exaust u can get more power then a s-15 sr20det!

good luck

I would also suggest going with the s14 motor if you will be doing a motor swap. I currently own a s15 spec R and the only real difference is the tranny, and the turbo is beefed up as well as injectors.
I get good aftermarket support right now but thats due to the fact that I am located in Japan right now.
S14 are older now and alot of people are crashing and getting rid of the S14s so it will be really easy and probably cheaper for you to be able to get the parts you require.
About the VTI my mechanic has put a big stress on me to pick up the Tomei type R cams. Claims a dramatic increase in power curve with no power sacrifice.

I would also go with an S13 or S14.The S15 will cos $2000 more, needs custom tranny mounts, and has thinner gears than the previous motors. With the money you would save, you could easily get more horsepower than the stock S15,plus it is easier to find parts, and much cheaper.

Re: S14 or S15 SR20DET ?

Hi buddy.
I am an owner of a Japanese spec S15 Silvia with the SR20DET.
The S14 has 220hp stock while the S15 has 250.
The engine is the same. ECU reprogramming, Ball Bearing on the GT28 turbine, and larger injectors, make the digfference on the hp.
The S15 might have 6-speed transmission but the S14's 5-speed box is much stronger and doesn't break that easy. My opinion is to do what i have done. BYU AN S15 SR20DET, AND LEAVE THE 5-SPEED GEARBOX.

Re: S14 or S15 SR20DET ?

i agree with blueS15. the s15's 6 speed tranny is very week and if u plan on doing drifting u need a good strong tranny. so id go with the s14 because its just so much better stock and i like the ball bearing low end turbo that it somes with. perfect forgeting sideways and getting back to traight. turbo that gets boost around 4400 rpm+strong 5 speed tranny= a lot of fun when getting sideways. just my two cents

Re: S14 or S15 SR20DET ?

yall are forgetting one thing bout s15. sure, it's expensive, and also the front clip. now, you also need the rear clip. you need that rear differential. it aint that simple. but if you can get it all, that's cool, be on your way. but expensive. good luck to those who do it
