SR20 engines are very well designed and were initially made to withstand the rigors of sustained high speed driving in Europe. When this engine came out, it had an impressively high 7,500 rpm redline (no VTEC or VVL!), good power for its displacement and decent fuel economy. Primeras have been raced for many years in BTCC (is that right?) all over the world.

That said, I don't necessarily think this motor is much more "famous" or well respected than some of the other Nissan motors.

For instance, th RB26DETT Skyline engine is probably more revered and then there's the VQ series motors which have consistently been voted as the best V6 engines and have received numerous awards. The VG30 motors (single and dual overhead cam versions) have also been very well received.

If you want to talk about older models, the L28 inline 6 motors are also really nice. Nothing beats a smooth revving, torquey inline 6, IMO.

Not quite BTCC= *British* Touring Car Championship. The Primera also used to race in at least one of the german touring car championships (SuperTouringWagen, IIRC), and currently in Europe you can see the Primera in European Touring Car Championship, both Super Touring Class and Super Production Class.

The engine is famous because it's good

yes, i understand what u r saying. but, what i don't understand is why SR20DE engines r been raced instead of the, for example, the engine on the maxima? (comparing only to front wheel drive cars, not to rear wheel drive sports cars). the part that i don't understand is that maxima engines r more powerful then our sr20de. so why not use the bigger and more powerful ones?

one of the few reasons that i can come up with is that there r more modification that can be done to the sr20de to make it faster, so it's more well known? true?

It's all about the 4's man...all about the 4's.

The Maxima V6 is famous in it's own right.

i read an article which dealt with how Nissan chose the sr20de engine..........its really quite small compared to the maxima engine (thats what they said at least) and because of its size and weight, it allows for great handling.......power can be added on, but the handling cant (for the most part).......

Rules limit the displacement, number of valves, number of cams, dry sump vs. wet sump, etc. Where the rules allow a wide range of displacements, weight becomes a factor. Usually smaller displacement engines allow you to run lower weight cars.

Specifically in the case of WRC, BTCC, and similar series world wide, the rules limit the displacement to 2.0 liters (or litres for those of you not from the US ).

The SR20 was designed to contest both the WRC and BTCC way back when.

Also, the SR motor is very turbo-friendly and since if you want to produce any serious power, u gotta go turbo anyways, the SR is a nice platform.
I have seen some japanese tuners put the SR20DET motor in the Z32 Fairlady (300ZX) and it was actually faster than a tuned v6..so go figure

actually...

the most famous sr20de's... the ones used in touring cars, are sr20det's with the turbos taken OFF, and the engine converted to normally aspirated, yet they can still tune them for 300hp.
