need more go (all motor)

i have a 93 civic ex. it has 80000 miles on it now. i want more power im not going to use NO2 and im not going to go fi. i want my car to be reliable drivable and i want it to last like any other honda. and to maintain good mpg is also a pretty high priority. so what direction should i take i dont want to spend a huge amount of money on it i know all the bolt ons so what kind of internal work can be done to put me in my seat.

Ok, you have a SOHC Vtec, You want:

1. no NOS
2. no FI
3. Don't want to spend alot of money
4. Maintain good gas mileage
5. AND want it to make more power while still being honda reliable.

Ok I don't know if you've fully noticed but the civic is not a high performance car. All the engines they have are economy engines save maybe the B16. It's less than 100 cubic inches of already tuned out engine power. For you to make ANY kind of real power out it you will:

1. lose gas mileage
2. lose reliability
3. Will need the aid of SOMETHING
4. And spend ALOT of money doing it.

I'm sorry but that's just the way it is. You can't have a cheap, reliable powerful car that gets honda gas mileage. It's impossible. The closest thing to what you're describing is an engine swap and that's not cheap.

Dug up an all-motor SOHC thread...

As far as cam choices, Zex (www.zex.com) does make 2 cams for the d16z6- one "street", designed to make more torque with a bit of upper rpm HP, and one "street/strip" or "race" that is designed more for high rpm HP.
Crane (www.cranecams.com) and Crower (www.crower.com) are both supposed to have cams available soon that should have similair applications as the ZEX cams. Skunk2(www.skunk2.com) and Jun (www.junusa.com) should both have cams available for the sohc vtec within a year or so.
If you want to hit 13's, you will definitely need high compression pistons (I believe you europeans get higher octane gas than we do, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem, other than fuel costs!)- probably at least 11.2-11.5:1 , forged rods, ported and polished head, valve job, etc., heavy duty valve train- as in titanium or stainless steel valves, titaniom valve spring retainers, high performance valve springs , a way to accurately control fuel and ignition timing, ie. hondata, tec-II, apex'i power fc,... the list goes on and on, but basically what I am telling you is you will need to do it ALL to get 13's out of your sohc vtec in a 92-95 chassis.
One other source you may want to check out is R&D Racing... they make stoker and overbore kits for D16's. They also do headwork and pretty much anything you would need to get that car hitting 13's as far as engine work. Their phone # is (310)516-1003. I'm sure importbuilders would have some suggestions for you, too .

Here are some sites to check out for your goal: www.gude.com www.jgenginedynamics.com www.cranecams.com www.crower.com www.webcaminc.com www.zex.com
Good luck man.

Disclaimer: This may be somewhat outdated. And, gas mileage will go down.

I've been though the SOHC build-up before. I recommend goin' for the ZEX "race" cam with a good cam gear, get an Apex VAFC, a good intake and cat-back and tune it all on a dyno... that should make you run with B-series Hondas.

are you serious! i would be able to hang with b series that would be awesome. but what would the drawbacks of this set up be? i can go to a dyno in town but i would have to tune it myself and i dont know how.
