Old Cartograf decal problem
I am just at the point of applying the decals to an old Esci Fiat 131 (The rare ESCI sponsored one) and I am having a problem. The decals look to be in fantastic condition and have been bagged up for years with a protective greaseproof sheet over them. When viewed under light there is no cracking or anything. However, when I dipped one decal, waited a minute or so then tried to slide it off the backing paper it broke up into small pieces, it seems to break where the clear is very very easily.
I have stopped for now so as not to ruin any more of the decals which I am guessing would be impossible to find, but was wondering if anybody knew what was wrong or if there is anyway to stop this from happening? Can I put something on the decals before transferring them to keep them together for example? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I would love to use the original decals on this car. TIA AJ

Never get this problem yet (not for the moment) but just a suggestion (maybe someone can tell me wheter it should or should not be done), I think applying a coat of clear on it might help. (or might not help, it's my own theory that I've never tried
)

Re: Old Cartograf decal problem
On the topic of Microscale liquid decal film, has anybody ever tried spraying it through an airbrush? I've used it on some laser printed decals and it left brushstrokes, not much but noticeable close up. I wonder what you could thin it with?

Re: Old Cartograf decal problem
Do you mean laquer thinner couldn't clean the dried up liquid decal from the airbrush? Sorry man, that's nasty!

My question is also about Microscale Liquid Decal Film so I am not making a new thread.
Will Microscale Liquid Decal Film protect decals from cracking and yellowing over time? I did not clear coat the decals on my first few models. What I have in mind is to apply it on the decals (for protection) rather than clear coating them. |

In the case where you have an entire car covered with decals you can do this and it helps to give the decals a uniform look and seal them together but I don't think it will keep them from yellowing. As for cracking I hever never seen a decal crack once applied unless the model was coated with future floor polish or if Tamiya spray clear was applied wrong. David http://www.scaleracecars.com |

Re: Old Cartograf decal problem
If all you're after is providing some protection for the decals, waxing is probably a better solution.
