the other night at work delivering pizzas, i walked out to my car that was still running and i noticed it was making this strange squeeking noise that its never made before. it eventualy got really loud and terrible sounding. sort of a groaning squeeking noise. could it be the timing belt or what? no check engine light or anything came on and other than the noise it runs perfectly. the noise seems to come and go. any ideas? thx

Probably less the timing belt and more the serpantine belt because the timing belt has ridges to prevent it from slipping.

if it is your timing get it replaced ASAP. if it snaps you are screwed. i dont recommend doing it yourself (trust me ive tried) i got a bout 90 percent done and then you there is a nut on the drive pully that is impossible to get off without industrial tools. so then i put it all back together 8 hours later and paid the 250 for the job. thats my .02

Ppl, it's not the timing belt. The timing belt doesn't slip or squeek and there's no warning light. It just snaps and kills your engine that's all there is to it.
Lube or preferably replace your serpantine belt and you'll be fine.

well, it turns out that i ran over some plastic mesh nettin stuff sometime and it wrapped around my axle and cut off the sleave and got all up my belts. it eventually got flung out of my belt but it messed up my axle. i had to get it rebooted. it didnt cost that much, good thing i caught it early enough.

well its turns out it wasnt the axle making the noise afterall, that was just fucked up for some other reason. i was driving home today and it was making the same fucked up noise and the engine light came on so i took it back to the shop. we figured out that my distributor had a bearing that had gone out and was rattling inside there. how much is a distributor and is it easy to install myself? would i be just as well off getting a junkyard part or should i go new? i know they are sorta expensive. thx for the help if anyone cares to reply....

Why don't you get the guts and rebuild it yourself with the help of a manual.

You know how the distributor has internal parts that wear down over time? Well you can rebuild it with the help of a manual. The haynes probably won't be enough for this so I suggest a Helms.
