A friend of mine has a 88 VW Fox that has 2 minor problems I was hoping some of you VW buffs could answer.
Its the Fox GL with the 1.8 liter if that helps at all. First, he has a fairly small oil leak(leaves about a 6" diameter spot after 1 hour of parking), that drips off the bottom of the oil pan. I suggested it could be the valve cover gasket, or the oil pan gasket, any other suggestions?? The second, more serious problem is his Reverse gear. Reverse is like most other VWs that is down and up by 1st gear. He said recently he engaged Reverse and heard a pop of some sort, and now Reverse does not work. Any clue what this may be?? |

first of all that oil leak is pretty common for old fox's. But run ur finger around the rim of the valve cover and see if u find any FRESH oil...if so you have a valve cover gasket leak. Then check the oil pan gasket if you can get under their.
Also if you live in the Hollywood area go call Woolfolk's VW repair shop and they are really good. As for the reaverse prob. it sounds like your budy grinded his reverse gear out, which is very easy to do especially in a FOX that old. I am mechanic of 4 years now and i have done it. Once those gears get worn they can be completely torn apart quite easily |
