Re: How much?

My most expensive purchase was the Tamiya Dakar Pajero, which I dropped $40 on. I haven't spent much on aftermarket stuff yet, and that will probably be limited to seatbelt kits, and maybe the SRC detail kit for the Pajero.

I tend to hoarde the inexpensive kits: 3-in-1's, the $5.97 specials at wally-world, etc.

Re: How much?

Depends. My most expensive project is without a doubt my Rosso NSX ($300 just for the kit) and since that looks like something I'll be too afraid to dig into, I'm going to sell it soon. Other than that, most of my models end up around $100 or $150. That seems to be the upper limit of cost; whether it's a kit + grade up parts, a kit + transkit, a kit + kit + kit, or whatever, it ends up in that range, including paint.

well I just dropped close to 130ish and climbing on 2 models (skyline and camaro), and about 6 years ago I dropped close to 500 on a 32 ford from walmart cuz I got all the photo etched, braided wires, hoses, revolver billet wheels, ross gibson engine, etc. etc. You get the point but they get pricey sometime if you let it...

My most expensive build was the 1:12 Skyline here : http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=319924
Didn't keep count of the cash but the referance material cost me $15,000

But the most expensive kit to buy was this Rare 1:12 Hasagawa Nissan Fairlady 300ZX @ $500 delivered from Korea

Most of us go buy a kit of our car, not vice versa!

But I never thought of buying a real car unless I can find the model of it.
And my wife wants a Scion tC as the mix of reliable transportation and good looks, but I only consider it as a reference material for a possible scratchbuilding project.

Kits are only the half of it...
I've spent $75 over the cost of a kit on a finished build, though there is PE and other detail bits along with a reference book and a case to hold the finished model.

Re: How much?

I've had to sell my old records, dvd's etc on ebay to muster up the money I need for this expensive hobby. I'm only just in the finishing stages of my second ever build and I've got three kits lined up for desert! Also, you feel inclined to get the p/e kits, but then there's the paints, the glues, the brushes, the thinner, the alcad II paint, the alcad II gloss base, the magnifying hands-free lens, cocktail sticks, blu-tack, tweezers, pin vice, drill bits, sanding sticks, clear coat, flat coat, polishing compound, wax, masking tape, food boxes (for dust-free drying), carbon fibre!!!!!

I only started out in this car modelling business in december last year but already I've probably spent in the region of £300! Thankfully though, some of the items I bought (paint, glues, masking tape, tools etc) will do for many builds.

I find it hard to fathom how teenagers are able to do this hobby to a professional standard. They either have wallets for parents or are professional granny robbers!!

Re: How much?

This is very "wide" question, like you see some of the guys are spending fortune on kits only, there are also some very expensive resin/metal kits, but the things are that you can mesure your crazynes only when you take ratio kit vs. all other stuff for that kit (no regular tools that will last for some other models to).
So I would say that I have some kits that I spend more then five times more money on affter market parts then on kit it self ( I don't count paints either). But like Will said it doesn't go much over 150$ a kit and I think it realy shouldn't (I am talking regular 1/24 plastic kits, resin/metal is new nightmare for my account ).

PS I forgot Steve, he doesn't count in any calculation
