More power from D15B twin-carb ?

hi there, i own an Australian spec civic GL, with the twin carb motor. Its quite a powerful little car even in stock trim (i think so anyway) are there any worthwhile mods to get some more power out of it ???

thanx

Welcome in sigh. I had a GL twin-carb before I found the SiR.

What the GL needs is a decent cool-air box to start. You'll notice that your air pickup is inside the engine bay = hot air = decrease in power. This is the only model that I'd recommend a CAI for as there is no airbox and cool air intake. On top of that, a cam upgrade (Honda car club has the mugen spec grind I think and decent headers plus 2" exhaust setup can't hurt. The carbs can be modded to give better pickup - but I can't remember what was done to mine but I'll try and find out. I do know it was a simple tweak.

The better route that I was starting with my GL is to drop the ZC 1600 twin-cam from our Si CRX in. You immediately get 30bhp extra power - probably more than the mods to the 1500. Get a CRX front cut and it will all bolt straight in - hardest part is the wiring but Hanny's at Smithfield and a few other places can do it.

I'm based in Sydney if you need help.

Cheers

IMO i would just swap in the 1.6L DOHC ZC into your car. You can get some mad power out of that motor down the road.

No way as quick as an ITR I have nowhere near their handling or power although my stock handling is better than a stock 'teg VTiR.

Compared to the last gen VTiR Civic hatch and coupe I'm quicker, I can hold my own against a lot of stock 8s and 6s - 160bhp with the SiR box and 1000 kilos = pretty damn quick. 0-100 is supposed to be 7 seconds - I only do 1 gearchange and I'd say that's pretty damn close as I hosed down a modified Starion turbo which was supposed to do 6s (BS ). 1/4 is supposed to be 15.3, my guess is 15.5 as I carry power steering, aircon and a sunroof.

The car is a lot of fun to throw around though - especially running it at it's 8000rpm redline

G_Racer: I'd agree about the ZC as it can be done up to 200bhp, but it's a lot of effort and the D15 twin-carb is a lovely little engine that responds well to mods. 130bhp is achievable without having to go through the hassles of ECU etc.
