Question Twin Cam??? DOHC???

Whats the difference between our Twin Cam and Dual Overhead Cam? Wouldn't "twin" mean "two" meaning "dual." So the only difference i see now is OVERHEAD. So whats the difference, are Cams located on top of side of the engine vs the bottom? what's the advantage and stuff?

JasIzBac,

Like everyone else said... it's the same thing. Just about any modern engine is DOHC (think some Neons have SOHC ... S=single).

About the only place you see the primary alternative these days is in domestic vehicles. Most american muscle (i.e., V8s and older 6s) don't use overhead cams and actually have the cam (single) down in the engine block. They operate the valves using lifters, pushrods, and rockers... a lot more mass involved to operate the valvetrain and they generally don't rev as high.

Here's a link that explains things fairly well.

cams 'n stuff on howstuffworks.com

Cheers.
