you can either powdercoat it, or just use high-heat resistant spray paint.

Even just regular spray paint is fine. Clean the cam cover throughly beforehand, petrol is probably easiest. Laying down a layer of primer is probably a good idea also. Then spray on a few coats, using a clean rag with a bit of petrol on it to clean the paint off the writing as you go. Did mine that way, and it's great, pics and documentation on my website will still be a few weeks away tho. In the end it's not going to be quite the same quality as powdercoat, but it looks sweet and what's the point on making it look really flash under there anyway when all most people see of your car is the back end as you go past...

I'm thinking about doing that to my car, too. I've got an extra VC laying around that I believe I'm going to "run some tests" on.:smoka:

Ummm Be carefull your talking about an area that gets very hot!

Powder coating is cheap, last time I checked $40.00 valve cover & some other components.

If you just want to do the lettering why not try putting a paper over it and rubbing a pencil over the lettering bits to get an inprint or something so then you could cut it out carefully so you have some kind of stencil to go around the lettering. Then all you would need to do is spray the lettering because the only way that i can see you doing it is with a very steady hand and a small paint brush, something i know i couldn't do!

Just an idea though, don't know if it would work

I used heat resistant (500 F) spay can. Spray it into the lid so you get a liquid. Dip the paint brush in and paint away. The paint i used was Egine Enamel and i did it this way on the brake calipers. I hope it comes out how you want and maybe post us some pics when U R finished.:bandit:

If you call 50C hot (122F). The VC doesn't really get very hot. The headers on the other hand... :flamer: sizzle...

so use hi-temp engine paint rite?
what about the primer.. does it have to be hi-temp primer?

what if you have slight scratches on the vc, what grit sandpaper to use to smooth it?

Yes high temp primer,

How the hell did you scratch the vc?

I have seen, and i think it was on se-r.net, an article on how to polish the vc. To do this of course you had to sand it first, but i cant remember where exactly it was. I might get back to you on that.

Just an idea, why not paint primer on, then sand it back in the way a body shop would, (blocking i think it is) to even out where the scratches are, depending of course on how deep! That is if U are going to paint the whole thing.

I think the primer should sort out any small scratches, it did for me when I pained the whole VC. Tho when I did mine I wanted the lettering just to be polished metal, so I took to it with a fairly corse grit (can't remember what # exactly) and then finished it off with some cut polish I had lying around. Came up nice and shiny.

Primal - Hot enuff to burn hand, interesting. Never noticed mine that hot. Hmmm, anyone got any ideas why such a difference? I'd been driving around for about an hour at around 3000 rpm (& 100km/h) when I took the temp of mine - 50C...

might wanna sand the letters with #400grit sand paper before you paint.

you can always use a hobby knife to scratch off excess that may have dripped on the sides of the letters.

sounds like a fun thing to do over the weekend!
