you have to go at it from underneath bud.

you dont need to remove the center console

your exhaust will get in the way and youll probably have some banged up knuckles when your done, but you need to disconnect the linkage from the stock shifter, and then there will be two more bolts keeping the shifter mounted in your car, remove those, and it should slide down. remove the boot from around the stock shifter, put it on the new one and reattch the parts you disconnected in reverse order.

Mine took a while cause i had never done it before, and its kinda scary just taking stuff apart but its worth it. good luck and come back if you need more help

by the way, my car is a 99 civic si, but it should be the same procedure

Actually you do need to work up top too. There are two gold flat screw type things that hold on those bolts. One faces towards the front of the car and one towards the back. You will have to pull up a rubber boot that goes around a circle metal piece around the shifter. This is where you will find the gold flat screws. You will need like locking pliers type things to hold these annoying things while someone from underneath loosens up the bolts. THEN go from underneath and disconnect the shift linkage from the shifter and pull it around the exhaust. When you connect it back up do the reverse of removal.
Oh and make sure that if you have a heat shield that you take it off because your short shifter might bang up against it allowing you not to shift. If you need more help i am always here or if you need a little bit better explanation, you can email me @ [email protected]
