Try This Out!!! Modify Your Stock Intake To A Cold Air Intake W/o The Pipe!

This past weekend, I installed a CAI on my car.

I took off the wheel and peeled off the black plastic cover.

Removed the baffle that sits behind the fender and behind the black plastic cover and then i had an epiphany.

YOU CAN MAKE YOUR STOCK INTAKE INTO A SEMI COLD AIR INTAKE BY JUST TAKING OUT THE BOTTOM BAFFLE AND PLUGGING UP THE OPENING BY THE BATTERY!!!!!!

Can someone try this????

I already have installed my CAI so I can't go back to the stock one because the hole i cut for the pipe is too big now otherwise I would have tried this for myself.

Steps:

1) Remove front driver's side wheel.

2) Unscrew screw on lip of wheel well and then take a flat head screwdriver and remove the button tabs that hold the plastic lining in place. There are two button tabs. One is on the ceiling of the plastic lining and the other is located towards the engine by the lining. All this will make sense when you take a look at it.

3) Unscrew the box that you see behind the plastic lining. There are two screws, one is apparant when you look at it. The other can be removed by ducking under the car and looking up.

4) Pull baffle off. It should just pop right off.

5) Plug up stock intake piping that can be seen by the battery by using SOMETHING... I'm not sure what to use there yet. Right off the bat I am thinking about using duct tape and just covering the edges by running strips over the opening. ( i know- totally ghetto- but hey- we're trying to save money here ya know? )

6) TAKE YOUR CAR OUT FOR A SPIN AND THEN LET US ALL KNOW IF YOU FEEL A DIFFERENCE!!!!!

I SERIOUSLY would like to know if anyone tries this... In fact, I'm sure we all would like to know.

Thanks and good luck!!

by the way- yes- i DO know that CAI works in more ways than just piping in ambient temp air.

I know the length of the pipe helps with the resonance of the air and aids to the quick flow of air.

HOWEVER-

The fact cannot be ignored that colder air for the engine will make a difference. And what better/cheaper way to pipe in cooler air than simply REMOVING dead weight thereby effectivly rerouting the source of air for the engine?

Better yet take it to a dyno and tell us if there is a difference.

I think that you may restrict airflow to the point where it won't help, the air might be colder, but i think the main airflow comes from right behind the headlight (straight path right to the intake box, no turns). You can try it, but i'd also be inclined to say that the air temp would be about the same either way, as air right behind the headlight, is probalby pretty close to the air inside the wheel well.

I could of course be talking out my ass and be totally wrong too.

If your gonna take out the baffle for an increase in air you should cut that liitle pipe out and put a piece of pvc elbo in to increase flow but don't forget to drill a hole for the air temp sensor

True, colder air makes more power. However, what you are ignoring is that when moving, the air at the filter is within just a few degrees of ambient. This has been confirmed by independent instrumented testing on the SE-R list, on this forum, and on the 944 list.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

nah- i didn't have a bubble...

and i wasn't discounting the benefits of the CAI... i have a hotshot CAI in my car.

i was just sharing my findings on a humongous baffled behind the bumper and that PERHAPS removing it and then blocking the opening that sits in the engine bay could be an alternative to some people who can't get their hands on a CAI.

also- about your point... were these tests done when air was being brought up behind the bumper? or when the air was being brought in from the corner of the engine bay? because if the air was from inside the engine compartment- i wouldn't be surprised if the air was just a few degrees of ambient.
