Question Male and Female

In your own words, how would you define the terms, "male" and "female"?

Okay, I see that this is going to be a bit more difficult than I had expected. Allow me to explain. This is just purely for use in a sociology paper. SmallTownDiva and I are both working on this for "Gender and Societies", so your assistance would be appreciated. Thank you!

And please don't make me resort to bribery.

Well, Sense you used the words "Male" and "Female" the answer for me is simple.

Male: A member of any species of animal or plant endowed with the type of sex organ that is designed to fertelize an egg.

Female: A member of any species of animal or plant endowed with the type of sex organ that carries an egg awating fertelization.

Now had you said "Man" and "Woman" then it would be come interesting.

I would say....

Males are the members of a species who carry the fertilization element of reproduction. Females are the members of a species who carry the egg element of reproduction and who bare the birth of the offspring either through live birth, the lying of an egg, or the deposition of a seed...

A bit like Gonthrax's, but that is to be expected I'm sure...

It's even simpler than that. It has to do with the direction of transmission of genes during conjugation.

Genetic material leaves the male and enters the female during conjugation. This definition even works for many bacteria that conjugate, even though they have nothing that could be called an 'egg'.

It is important to also realize that there are both asexual creatures (neither male nor female) such most yeasts - and that there are hemaphroditic creatures (both male and female) such as many worms.

Many creatures can even switch between some or all of male, female, asexual and hemaphroditic states; depending on their environment and even mood.

The question is simple, yet the answer is complex.....Seems to me that a similar question would be ,what is blue and what is green?

Almost everybody is capable ,when asked the above question,of pointing to something that is blue/green and saying..this is blue/green.

but ask them to actually define it.. That is when the fun starts.

Just as there are a million shades of blue, and a million shades of green, ranging from almost identical to extremely different,so it is with male and female. To try and define male or female is to fail to understand that the term relates to an almost abstract concept, rather than one specific concrete point of difference.

Definition of Male:

Strong, level headed, easy going, intelligent, witful, loving, slow to anger, quick to resolve, aptly capable of fixing most anything, constantly horny, stubborn, and occasionally lazy

Definition of Female:

Under the age of 30 ----- Flaky

31-39 ----- Intelligent, motivated, decisive, frustrated, onry, in search of...

40-50 ----- Balanced, well adjusted, sophisticated

51- up ----- sorry, I can't help you there, no experience beyond 50.

That to me is just a straight job.....one quick scan of the organs concerned will separate the men from the women.Sure some guys are more feminine than most girls, and a few girls are more masculine than the average guy,but for this man at least, its what you have down the front of your trousers that defines wether you are a man or a woman.

Too easy.
Men = Homo sapiens of the male variety
Women = Homo sapiens of the female variety

(see my definition of male and female above).

PS> Perhaps a more interesting question is what is the difference (if any) between sex and gender?
