How did you get into this hobby and how did you learn?

How were you introduced to this stuff? Did you buy a book or did someone help you?

Re: How did you get into this hobby and how did you learn?

I got into car modelling first by making warhammer 40,000 models, then i picked up a few 1/43 scale cars. After 1/43 scale i moved on to 1/24 scale and have been building them ever since. As for learning, i learnt a lot just by doing, and a few tips from this forum.

Re: How did you get into this hobby and how did you learn?

Started at age twelve making crappy models with unpainted bodies. I decided to get more serious at 14 and paint everything(not to well I might add). Also at that age I found AF. Which has been probboly the best learning enviorment for any modeler. The FAQ has everything anyone would ever need. The modelers here are so helpful. This place is great. Ever since then my models are great and I can lay a no-orange peel paintjob on. Much props to AF!

Re: How did you get into this hobby and how did you learn?

Watched my Dad build a 1/16th scsale Don Garlits Dragster in 1973. had to have my own within a few months. Dad helped me with the first one and from there I learned by trial and error and reading books and using magazines for reference. In the olden days we didn't have the internet, you actually had to get off your butt and go down to the library and look up the info.
When I got back into it some years ago I started reading Scale Auto and other mags, then I found the internet.

I also learned from my dad. I remember helping him build a Testors Top Gun F14A and an original Revell Stone, Woods, and Cook 41 Willys with opening doors. Then when I was 12-13 I built a few of my own models, I remember building the Revell Pontiac Banshee without any paint, all glue .
funny looking thing...
Back then I was really into Lowrider's, I built the Metallic green Impala from "Boyz N The Hood" among a few other lowriders (some of them hopped, very poorly). All were pretty horrible attempts btw.
From there I took a 12 year hiatus. Then a friend of mine started working at a hobby shop, kinda got me back into it. I then found AF, the greatest on-line source for modeling, and have been hooked ever since.

JeFF

btw: its really cool to hear other peoples stories.

Re: How did you get into this hobby and how did you learn?

Picked up this hobby from my dad and older bro. They only built army stuff including tanks, ships and airplanes. I myself started building ww2 airplanes like zeros, p-51s at the age of 10. Stopped for about 4 years and all of a sudden i got addicted to cars for some reason. I defenitly learned from my own mistakes and af helped me out a little.

My uncle had bought me a Lamborghini Diablo model when I was 8. I couldn't even get the pieces to fit, so I trashed it. For the next few years, I continued to break several kits before I could finish one. In middle school, I decided to start building Testors diecast kits, and I eventually began to get better. When I got in 7th grade, I think, I found some model car sites on the Internet, and began learning new tips to build better models. I started to get better, and I've been improving ever since.

Re: How did you get into this hobby and how did you learn?

i started off at 12. Fixing unpainted models with superglue. The kit did never stay intact for long, things started to fall off. Started off later with some gp bikes, decided it was time to give the models some paintjob. Handbrushed acrylics..even fot the body.It was not a very nice sight.
Went onto the internet to learn how others do their models and that's where i stumbled onto AF. Learnt everything there is to be learnt and here i am. =>
AF is indeed a most wonderful teaching tool.

I actually got into modelling when I stumbled upon AF. I don't remember what I was searching for, but one of the results came up as AF Car Modeling forum and I clicked it to see what it was.

Re: How did you get into this hobby and how did you learn?

An old friend of my mother's had a big get-together and while i was going through other peoples' things, I came across his model collection. I was around 6 at the time and was fascinated by it. I have always been into cars but that was the true beginning of my infatuation. I fell out of it for a while but we moved and a guy was throwing stuff out; He saw me standing there looking bored and asked me if I wanted some car stuff. In that box were several crappily buily built models and I took them home and painted them again.
