ever get this feeling?

i want to be a mechanical engineer when i grow up. i know ME's think up new ideas to make better whatevers, but as of right now, i can't think of anything that would a car(my area of interest) better. i'm only 15 now, but i have a feeling i would be a crappy ME since i can't think of anything. i think with more education i could think of ideas, but as for right now

ps: mods, if this is in the wrong area, feel free to move wherever

Get confident, stupid! Seriously, you're 15, you haven't even studied anything yet about being a mechanical engineer. Read about how a car works. Car engines are very complex; read about how they work. There are so many things that can be done with the mechanics of a car. Give it time.

Well speaking from experience, since I am a tool maker. I really did not know what I wanted to do early on. I always said I would be a mechanical engineer, but went down a slightly different path though basiclly the same field.

I started out by doing odd jobs, you know sweeping floors and helping the workers out at my first job and then started to get hands on. I went from there. Took courses in Robotic's and nuematics.

As you may have guessed spelling is not one of my stronger suits hahaha. Hang in there. Good ME's can make a good living and we would not be where we are today without them.

Well i dont know if u want to do what i do??.. im an Mechanical Technician.. not quite engeneer status but close. I fix what the Engeneer's design, i build it, upgrade it, prity much take there ideal and take it to the next lvl. i dont start nothing but finnish what others start.

They pays good and im on AF all day hahaha im only 21, so i guess that means anyone can do it if u try hard enough i suppose.... then again that would apply to everything. nm...:bandit:

Bottom line engineers sit on the drawing board all day, whiles ppl like me make their ideals work :sun:

Well, I'm studying to be an ME right now(1 yr left), and let me tell you right now, do not get into ME school unless you think that it is what you want to do. ME school is way to hard to go in half-assed. As for your ingenuity, don't worry. As you are 15 you probably haven't learned the in's and outs of a car yet. People who invent things usually have an extremely thorough knowlege of the old system first, and that is why they invent things, because they were very familiar with the way things were done, and they see another way of doing it more efficiently. This is gonna happen for you in some field someday, but don't worry about it yet.

Sounds like you may be having a little fear of the unknown...we all get it. It's good that you have an idea as to what you want to do when "you grow up" One suggestion, try to find someone who is an ME and see if you can get them to sit down and chat with you about their field, the good and bad parts, and see if that's what you really want. As time goes on you may even change your mind...I did 3 times. I am 27 now and about 2 years FINALLY decided what I wanted to do. I think it kinda sucks that when you're in high school they expect you to know what you wanna do til you're 65. When I took some college classes in my early 20's, most of the class consisted of people in their 30's and 40's looking for a change of career. Some people can stick with one thing for years, others need change...I know I am one. Ok I will quit babbling now. Good luck on what you decide
