A/C Whine or Alternator

I think my compressor may be going becuase when im driving around WITHOUT the A/C on, i can hear a whine as the car is accelerating. When I have the A/C ON I can hear the whine alot louder. Is it ready to go? Or is the alternator the prob?

Could be the electric clutch bearing on the compressor since it still whines when the AC is off. If you want to isolate whether it's the compressor or alternator, try taking the belts off one at a time to hear when the whine stops.

Hey thanks! Umm...so how can i take the belts off one at a time? Oh and...if its the clutch...can that just be replaced or do you need a whole new A/C Unit?

Ummm .... I didn't actually have a look at the belts since I don't have the car with me .... I was just assuming they had their own individual belts.:o

As for the clutch, I'll have a look in my Haynes manual when I get home, otherwise ... I don't know.

Duhhh ... I see what you mean about the belts (now that I've had a look).

Maybe you could remove the belt, and then run the alternator using something else as a temporary belt (I've heard the GF's pantyhose can be used for this but accept no liability for any wrath incurred).

Haynes manual was no help either on the clutch.

Any luck figuring out the A/C noise? I have the same problem. I have a compressor w/clutch that I purchased from a salvage yard ($125.00). I was going to attempt the replacement myself. Does any have any horror stories doing this? or how to tips.

Also... I have not tried it yet, but I guess NAPA belt 25-060331 (21m - 855m) can be used to bypass the A/C compressor. This could aid in figuring out what is making the noise.

My baby does that too, but my belts are cracked so I hope that is the extend of my problem.

I have the same problem on my P11, but I really don't think it's the A/C clutch.

I've just had my aircon recharged to full pressure. This means that when the A/C clutch engages, you can feel a slight "pull" on the engine. I haven't felt this, so I doubt it's the A/C.

As for what it is, god only knows...

Not me. Other than a RAM Air filter, the car is bog-standard.

I had a chat with the Nissan dealership a couple of hours ago (had to pick their brains about another problem). They said they have never heard of this before. Judging from the amount of responses on the forum (I've seen this one come up a couple of times before), I'd say they were pretty useless...

If it's any use, the noise is at it's worst when the car is cold - it slowly dies down as the car warms up.
