Can A Non Tourbo Engine Be As Fast As A Tourbo Engine?

i HAVE AN SR20DE ENGINE ON A 92' G20. I WANT TO HOOK MY ENGINE UP, BUT I DONT KNOW IF I SHOULD SPEND A BUNCH OF MONEY ON AN ENGINE THAT HAS OVER 100K ON IT. I WAS THINKING ABOUT PUTTING A TOURBO EDITION OF MY ENGINE IN MY CAR, BUT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT $3,000 ROUGHLY. PLUS ITS GOING TO COST MORE THAN THAT I KNOW IT. IM ASKING IF ANYONE KNOWS ANY WAY TO AVOID THIS PRICE AND STILL MAKE MY ENGINE JUST AS FAST AS A TOURBO? i WANT TO KICK THE HONDA GUY'S ASSES BADLY. I DONT WANT MY CAR LOUD BUT POWERFUL SOUNDING. HAS ANY ONE GOT THE SPECS ON A 1/4 MILE WITH A SR2ODET MOTOR? HOLLA AT ME, LET ME KNOW!

Please, do us a favor and turn off your caps lock.

To answer your question - you have to pay to play.

If it were easy/cheap to build an N/A SR20DE to make 250 horsepower you wouldn't see everyone here talking about turbocharging. It is *possible* to build a non-turbo DE that will put out 200+ horsepower, but it is neither cheap nor easy.

If you just MUST have an N/A motor, you could consider getting the SR20VE.

If you just MUST stick with the DE and still want big power, be prepared to buy a LOT of stuff:

headers
exhaust
cams
CAI
ported head
underdrive pulleys
upgraded clutch
etc, etc, etc.

Getting an N/A SR20DE up to 200HP is going to cost thousands of dollars. Almost as much (probably more) than going with a turbo. Make it easy on yourself and either get a VE/DET or lower your expectations.

Yeah, you'd probably end up spending more $ than a turbo set-up. When you open your hood you would see nothing but aftermarket parts except for maybe windshield wiper fluid container. You could also put a sticker on your car which reads " Hardly Street " meaning you wouldn't be wanting it as your daily driver.

Since when is an engine a cosmetic upgrade?

This was written by George, a fellow G20 owner and very helpful person.

Brief description:

"This is the table of contents for articles chronicling the acquisition of a spare SR20DE engine, the disassembly, the build up to a 200 bhp monster, and installation into my 1991 SE-R"

Interested?

Yep.

Step 1: Get a wheelbarrow
Step 2: Fill it with money
Step 3: More than that.....

A DET conversion can be done properly for as little as $3k. My NA engine cost just shy of $6k US.

I was going to build a NA engine that should be able to hit 250 hp (streetable), but then I bought the race car (some assembly required).

When you go to the track (since that's where you race, right?) what Honda's are you looking to beat? If you can't beat a Civic you may want to do a big tune up, if your looking at hybrid hatchbacks, or modded gsr's or preludes, stuff that runs 14s and faster, you're going to need quite a few N/A mods (at least what i have, plus JWT cams, and maybe higher compression and headwork if you want that extra couple tenths), or you could look at getting a Jim Wolf Nitrous system. I would rather go N/A or turbo, but Nitrous is another option. With a couple N/A mods (I/H/E/Cams, and clutch), and a JWT 100 shot, you'd be looking probalby around a mid 13-14 second 1/4, depending on where your at, how well you can drive, what tires you run (street/slicks), etc...
Hope this helps

when you guys say 'race' a lot of you mean 'drag racing'...our g20's were really never intended for dragracing but more for corner carving roadcourse type racing. you are using the wrong tools to try to accomplish your goals.. like using a scissors to cut a 2lb steak. you can do it, but there are many faster/easier ways to do it. like get an american mucle car.

But that's no fun at all! Being the underdog is fun sometimes, especially when you come out ahead. I didn't set my car up for drag racing at all, but, when i get the chance to go, i usually do anyways. It's a lot less expensive than going to a road course, and it's still pretty fun, more so if you have a big group of people at the track.
