vtec

my friend has just bought a 95 civic ex with a b16a engine in it.

My question is why doesn't the vtec kick in when it is supposed to?

It comes on and off.

The b16a crossover point its at 5500 rpm. If its not coming on at that point, then what the hell is it doing? What do you mean it comes on and off? When?

Low oil pressure can cause that to happen...

well if its a ECU problem or a wire problem [ok not the wire going to the solenoid] the check engine light should turn on!- normally!

And how does it come on and off???

well when my friend was testing it...the car sometimes had vtec, but mostly it didnt...if the vtec kicked in, in first gear it would be able the turn on in the other gears, but mostly it stayed off.

He got his car fixed at New Again and it still happened

yea......the oil pressure could be low........my bro-in-law has a 2nd gen b16 in his hatch and he has to wait for the oil light to come on before he can really punch it......if the light doesn't come on, vtec doesn't kick in......just a thought
