Difference in VTec between Si and Vtec models?
I just read that very common Vtec description article that seems to be floating all over the internet: http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Technical/VTEC.htm
So, what do they mean by this: "The VTEC system used in most Civics (EX, Si and the del Sol Si but NOT del Sol VTEC) is a little closer to that in the NSX, etc." What difference is there in the VTec Coupe del sol engine? Is it better or worse? I don't quite understand what the author is getting at... Perhaps someone can shed some light on this subject. |

I think the arthur means that the way the lobes, cams, lift, air flow, etc on the SOHC VTEC engines works similar to the way that it does on the V6 NSX. Not like hp, but more of the way the engine works on how it brings in air, etc. It maybe setup different for the DOHC VTEC integra, del-Sol. I read it kind of fast, but I think that is what he means. He explains pretty good how the DOHC and the SOHC VTEC works, but that that comment did throw me off too. A little confusing, but I think that is what he was getting at. I could be wrong.
Go to www.teamdelsol.com FAQ look for stats on performance. There is a breakdown of each engine for each model. Find hp, torque, compression, gearing, etc. The b16a DOHC VTEC engine that is in the VTEC model provides 160hp at 111lbs of torque. The d16 SOHC VTEC engine that is in the Si model provides 125/127hp at 106lbs of torque. The b16a is the better engine, but as you notice the torque numbers are similar for both models. If you were to race a d16 and b16 stock off the line, then they would run really close to each other with the b16a ahead a little. The b16a would start to pull away a lot more once the DOHC VTEC part of the engine kicks in, which is around 5400 rpm. Blair 95 VTEC www.teamsolil.com |

Thanks for clarifying that a little bit. I've seen piggy back VTEC tuning modules, like the one manufactured by Crane Cams. Supposedly, they're supposed to enable the driver to tune the RPM at which the VTEC system kicks in; say, at 2500 RPM. Will the agressiveness of the cam lobes really make much of a difference at that RPM range? What the the VTEC is really doing is preventing valve "floating", right? So, if the valves aren't going to "float" at 2500 RPM anway, what's the VTec tuning module supposed to do? It doesn't seem to make sense.
In addition, I've also seen plenty of superchargers for the del Sol S and Si models. Are there any available for the VTec Coupe? I'm speculating that the DOHC VTEC will make about 224 HP with a supercharger, depending on boost levels. The only reason I want one is because I've got a good friend with a Daytona IROC R/T; Dodge's 16 Valve, Lotus head, Turbo 3 motor, and I'm determined to beat him one of these days. His car makes 225 HP and it's WAAAAYYYY heavier than a sol. I surmise that it'll be hard to keep the car on the road, but I'll spank him in any race his turbo throws at me!!!

I take that back about the Crane Cams thing. I believe it's APEXi that makes the VTEC tuning module.

since the del sol vtec has a B16 which is a very very popular engine and used in civc si and many other cars there are a ton of performance parts available. i know that the jacksons supercharger will work on it and so will vortec. any turbo that you can think will work. and there are tons of performance parts out there. just surf the web you will find the parts.

Not sure about the engine question, but Jackson Racing doesn't make a supercharger for the VTEC model sol. Only for the Si sol. You can buy the supercharger for the Civic Si and it would work fine, but there are issues with fitting it in the engine bay. Something about ABS lines and some other issues. I think a small part of the charger has to be cut to allow it to fit in. You could take the ABS off, but I think there is another issue, just can't remember what. It has been done, but I think some special brackets had to be made. Not sure about the VORTEC supercharger. You could also use the civic si charger for the VTEC model sol, but I believe that kit works with the OBD2 computer. 94/95 DOHC VTEC b16a3 engines used a OBD1 computer. The 96/97 b16a2 engine uses the OBD2 computer. Not sure if you can use a OBD2 computer on a b16a3 engine. The b16a2 is the same as the 99/00 Civic Si.
