Starter?? It' just clicks...
Hey guys/gals I got a 92 Civic LX...it just clicks when the key is turned.
So I assume this means it's the starter...the battery terminals are corroded too. I need to learn how to replace the starter, does anyone have instructions, or could explain it to me? I would appreciate it. THANK YOU!!!! -Dave |

i had that problem with my 1990 chevy. when i started it, it would just click and not start. the problem was that the fuel pumped was fucked. so it might be the same problem with yours. you should try jacking up your car and try starting it. if it starts then its probably your fuel pump busted.

What's the best way to clean up corrosion? I also read that if the starter is getting enough power it only clicks once, but if it's not getting enough it'll click alot. Does that sound right? Thanks

Re: Starter?? It' just clicks...
to clean up corrosion on the battery posts? If that's the case, buy a battery post cleaner. It's this thing that you stick on the posts and it has metal bristles on the inside and you just scrub the posts with it.

Re: Starter?? It' just clicks...
That happened to me once. It turned out that the power cable going from the battery to the starter busted off completely. If you really want to remove the starter it is quite easy. Just remove the power cable to the starter and the plug coming off the wiring harness and then there are 2 bolts that need to be removed. Then there ya go just pull it off.

Cool thanks guys!! I noticed I can't even see the battery posts to unhook it. I'm just gonna put a new battery in, and see what happens. Should I worry about battery acid, or getting shocked?

Re: Starter?? It' just clicks...
I also have a bit of power with my starter... about 2 months ago, I was at Subway (yummy) and I started my car but it jus made a very weak starty and when i gassed it in park(P) it then came upto normal idle level... right after that I hit a dip and then my auto car just shut off... same prob happened whe I tried starting it at the light and then it runs fine after that... Never had the problem again! Could it have been that my dad didnt use this car for 8 months while rolling around in his new TL?
Do I need to replace anything? OR get it inspected? |

Don't worry about getting shocked, a car battery does not have enough voltage to shock you, as far as the acid, I woudln't rub my hands all over the posts, but you should be fine. If you get any on you just wash it off. |

A good way to clean up the corrosion is with baking soda. Mix some with water and use a tooth brush to clean it up. And the clicking probably means you are not getting adequite power from your battery. So clean that up and make sure that the clamps are on securely and tight to the posts and thenif the problem persists then go for a new battery.

Oh and MunG35 the problem is probably your battery. Because it was sitting for so long. The posts might have gotten a little rusty so it is not making a good clean connection. Maybe when you hit that bump it may have knocked your connection loose. So I would suggest taking both + and - off and cleaning up the posts and clamp em down tight. I had the same problem before on my eclipse.
