Re: question about supra turbo

The hardtop isn't rare, a turbo hardtop isn't rare. It's simply the lesser made of the MKIII. Targa's definetly outnumber hardtops and turbo targa's are the least produced of the USDM MKIII Supra. As for the head you should first try local/area junkyards. Turbo and N/A heads are the same except for a cam in the 86.5-88 N/A is slightly different, but it's not a big deal, most turbo owners actually swap it in. If you somehow can't find any from all the junkyards then try supraforums.com MKIII parts for sale section, but it's going to be heavy so shipping isn't going to be cheap.

Re: question about supra turbo

If it's a loud knock then yes, thats rod knock, it's common and pretty much assured if you run the 7m low on oil. The more you run the engine the worse the crank and rod will get trashed, eventually to the point where neither of them will be usable anymore. You could do a full rebuild on the engine, or you could buy an imported JDM 7m-gte, it's your call. What is the engine that "the dude" is trying to sell you? If it's a 7m-ge your going to have more trouble than it's worth IMO, a 7m-gte will be perfect as long as it doesn't knock or have any symptoms of BHG. Personally I would rebuild it, it will cost more than importing a 7m-gte but if you do it right in the long run it will last much longer and be able to support the mods you'll most likely put on.

Re: question about supra turbo

6M or 7M stamped only, differance is the 6M has less counterweights. The 6M crank was used until the first part of 1989, the 5M crank is a 2.8L. If he's selling you a 6m-ge engine don't waste your time, you'd be better off rebuilding what you have now.

Re: question about supra turbo

Why would you convert it to twin turbo? One turbocharger will do the same job just as good plus will cost less, have less parts to break, be less of a hassle to install, require less to fabricate, and so on and so forth.

Re: question about supra turbo

hey 7mgte, i was in ur exact possition before
had my car for a few months, i think i ran over a puddle with a torn intercooler pipe and maybe got water inside engine or something. it started doing that rod knock thing. i decided to buy another motor and swap it in instead of just repairing it. It's all on what u want to do. One thing im wondering is what's with everyone always saying that they want to convert it into twin turbo? im guessing because it sound nice, how twin is having two turbos. One big one will be more than enough.

Re: question about supra turbo

JDM = Japanese domestic market
USDM = United States domestic market
A JDM 7m is the exact same as a US version minus the EGR system, they go for $600-800 all day long. Why do you only want a crank and pistons by the way? I'm sure you didn't damage the pistons and the crank can be machined back into spec as long as it's not too bad, you should have a machine shop inspect it. 7M-GTE crank is the same as a 7M-GE crank just so you know, pistons are the difference. Only differances in the crankshafts were the 6m versions were used until 89, 7m versions were used until 92.
