Question Help w/Fuel Filter Replacement! 1995 RS.

Symptoms: backfiring, coughing, choking, sputtering when I accelerate in lower RPMs-- like it's not getting fuel. Starts no problem and seems to idle normal. Tried putting in the moisture additive remover on the last tank to no avail. Air filter new.

So I bought a new fuel filter which is probably due, but I don't have a Chiltons and I noticed the filter is buried. Anybody got an FAQ for dummies on how to replace?

Buch obliged. MC

Thanks for the link. My knuckles are bleeding just looking at that install. Found a shop that'll put in my part for $ 70 which sounds reasonable.

So, just for a reality check, do those symptoms sound right to be pinpointing the fuel filter? I guess plugs could also be the culprit?

THX MC

I'd replace the plugs too. it sounds a lot like that as well. besides... new plugs never hurt anyone.. especially if you never remember replacing them. Good luck.

I misdiagnosed the problem!

Quick update on this issue.

Turns out there was oil on the plugs causing the backfiring etc. So I returned the fuel filter, got a valve cover gasket and plug gasket kit, and had the work done by a local shop here in N. Virginia. Also had them go ahead and replace the plugs. The labor was $ 98. I supplied the parts. In the middle of it they called and said the PVC Valve needed replacing too plus a new hose.

That may be obvious to everyone else, but I'm a novice. The final tab for labor and the valve was $ 150. My parts were around $ 30.

Thanks for all the advice.
