boring the ew4 motor out

has anyone gone over .030 inches overbore on a 1.5L ew4 motor? how big can i go w/o warping the walls of the bore. now the other question. how can i strengthen this block. the crank i'm not too worried about i can find one of those. call me crazy but i want to see where i can go with this stock motor.

Re: boring the ew4 motor out

EW4 1.5 8V SOHC PGM-FI 1488 91hp@5500rpm 93tq@4500rpm '86 Civic/CRX Si (USA)
an EW4 is not going to get much better than it is without some sort of forced induction, boreing it out is kinda pointless, if you are going to go through all that troubble why not just swap in the D16A1 motor from the 86-89 integra, its a DOHC engine and it's a 1.6l rated at 118hp [look in my sig, the link leads you back to that faq thread]

oh, i already directed anothe guy here, the redpepperracing.com has a FAQ on engine questions that may help. (it's all 84-87 CIVIC/CRX there, nothing else)

Re: boring the ew4 motor out

it's actually a 1.5 12V SOHC PGM-FI 1488 91hp@5500 rpm 93tq@4500rpm '86 Civic/CRX Si (usa), not 8V, lol sorry. but i know about it but i want to be different *whine*. and yes forced induction is the route i am going to go but i was thinkin how can i get 12 lbs of boost on this block.

Re: boring the ew4 motor out

search my friend...its in the top right corner
12 psi is getting up there a bit, it will require all the internal goodies like forged pistons, beefey connecting rods and a balanced crank. if you want to get that kind of psi i would defiantly not bore out
the cylinder since you are going to want all the strength you can get out of that block (not that it's a bad block but making it weaker isn't a good idea)

[and with the specs, i get those from sites like this and usually just copy and paste and always neglect to correct, the truth is there was not even an 8 valve head that year, it was either the CVCC head with the auxillery valve or the 12 valve SI / Canadian model DX]

2ndgensi do for it man, build the ew4. I am doing the same thing with my 85 wagon(ew1). I am curious as to what I can get out of it, and how far I can go. You should do the same. I would be interested in seeing what you can get out of the ew4. do it dude.

Re: boring the ew4 motor out

wonderwagon, get yourself a EW3, or the head of a Canadian EW2 engine--it's the same non-CVCC head as the SI, it will bolt up to your EW1 block and you can run with your stock carb, you just have to modify the CVCC ports in the manifold slightly

Re: boring the ew4 motor out

i was thinkin .020 over to maintain a little strength. arp studs(do they make 4 bolt mains for this block).forged everything. oh yeah i work at a machine shop. we build straight racing engines so it's not like i don't have the tools and equipment to do this right. i just started gettin into hondas though so that is why i joined with all my "strange" questions. lol

Re: boring the ew4 motor out

4 bolt mains? that sounds like Chevy talk!
have a look here, this guy rebuilt a D16A1 integra motor for a future turbo application and was very keen on doing it right, it may give you some ideas. also search around http://www.redpepperracing.com a bit, you mite find something there.

Re: boring the ew4 motor out

that's the same route that i'm going to take with my 86 civic si. its got the ew4 12v 1.5 fi motor in it I wish they still made that turbo kit for it. would be alot easier to just bolt on a kit and not have to fab one yourself
