chirped third!!

i was driving back from school and i end up racing this riced out 2000+ eclipse that i see around campus a lot. i knew i would beat him (he has the four cylinder), but the thing that impressed me was when i shifted to third my tires let a chirp! i thought maybe this was a one time thing so a couple lights later this guy again wanted to race (didn't learn the first time), and sure enough shifting to third let out a chirp! i have a 2000 z24 stick and completely stock. i had no idea that it was capable of doing that! any other z24 owner been able to do that??

Chirped third

High I had a 1990 z24 cavalier with a stock 3.1 5speed in it. I could roll my tires off in 1st 2nd 3rd and chirp 4th. The only problem it had was it shut off at 115mph. Unfortinitly before I could fix that problem I wrapped it around a tree at 65mph and twisted the frame on it. I have resently acquired a 1989 z24 with a 2.8 auto. The plus to it is it's a convertible. But if anyone needs a 3.1 with a 5speed trany don't hessitate to inquire with me I still have it the engine only has 30,000 miles on it.

Re: chirped third!!

Damn man, you have some bald ass tires then. No way your chirping third in a stock z24. Either you really need new tires or your full of $#!%. Now if you said "I chirped third in my stock manual Z28" i could start believing you.

I have the 92 Z24 with 3.1. Bought it in Germany and drove it on the autobahn for 2 1/2 years. Loved it but the damn speed shutoff really aggrevated me. Always set it 1 mph lower then cutoff and hit cruise. LOL.

Re: chirped third!!

thats tight man. i dont know totaly what the year or anything that one of my teachers had last year but it would also chirp them in third, sometimes. i have to say for that car its kinda impresive but to me its nothing out of the ordinary, i also can chirp the tires going into third, depending on what kind of street it is. the only differance is that im going around 90 when i hit third. my car only has a 3 speed. i dont mean to be a dick or anything im just sayin. like i said for your car thats tight. i always like to see when newer cars can do stuff like that.

oh and a little off topic, Vinny... think about traction for a minute, what gives you better traction? brand new street tires, or tires that have no tred at all. and if you say brand new tires then you would be wrong. why would someone run slicks? cuz they have no tred on then. more surfase area on the ground, witch means more friction between them and the ground, and that means more traction. not trying to be a dick or anything to anyone like i said, but something like that is simple and when someone doesnt know that i kinda wonder about that person. now that can be totaly different say if there was a little dirt or sand or watter or something on the ground cuz then that would be as you are thinking and cause less traction. but for you to just outright say that he must have bald tires you would be jumping to conclusions and have absolutly no reason for thinking that at all. cuz your reasoning is totaly wrong.

Re: chirped third!!

slicks are made of a much softer rubber...you will get much better traction from a brand new street tire compared to a street tire with minimal tread.

Re: chirped third!!

When I got new tires on my 91 2.2 5 speed I could Roast them in 1st gear, it was alot loader with new tires than with old. Slicks don't make much noise when they are spinning.

Re: chirped third!!

slicks heat up faster because there softer. thats what gives them good traction. They get better tracion becaues most slicks are 15 inches wide

Thank you studballs and bigdaveangell. 68chevelle, how are you comparing bald stock tires to slicks!?!?! There is more to slicks than having a bare tire with no tread. When a tire becomes bald it usually dries up and starts cracking. Now think about your traction with tires like that.
