Angry 2000 Beetle Timing belt broke 1.8T

I just bought a 1.8 t NB and the belt broke on the way home and I am basically just wondering if the engine has just ate its self? The dealer said he would take it back. However, I like the car and would be willing to put a belt on it if I knew if the engine was ok. Any ideas or comments to help me make my decision would be great.

Thanks
Gary

It will need a new head. Most likely the bottom end is ok.
