heater control valve help?

Hi guys when ibought my 71 chevelle the heatcore was bypassed. im soon going to be changing the heatercore and was wondering if a bypass valve is suppose to be there??? Reason im askin is because there wasnt one there and the repair manual says nothing about having one.... Any help thanks in advance........
