crank pully leak

The crank pully on a 63 bug is leaking. how hard is this to replace, do i need to split the case?

If it's leaking from the rear pulley (the one with the belt to the generator) you could have trouble. There is no seal there, just an oil slinger & press fit pulley to the case. You can try replacing the pulley first to see if that stops it, otherwise its new engine time as the case is worn. I've seen some of the cheap aftermarket pulleys leak because they weren't made to the same quality as the originals. With the right puller you can replace the pulley w/o removing the engine.
