Question ABS problems

I have a 99 GMC Sierra Z71. The problem is after this past hunting season both the brake and the ABS lights started coming on. They are not on all the time. Sometime daily , sometimes not for a few days. I had it checked out by a brake place and they found an error code that they wouldn't give me and said the dealer said it was the Electric Brake Control Module (ECBM) and was about $1000 to fix. It seems that something may be loose or not making a good connection. Any ideas or any way to disconnect the lights? Thanks

I also have a '99 Sierra Z71 with the same EBCM problems as many, many other '99 Sierra owners. The good folks at my local GMC dealership were willing to replace the EBCM for a mere $1080. As a bonus, they would be using the same faulty part which of course is bound to fail in the same manner.
Instead, I sent my shorted out EBCM to Gavin Curtis at www.circuitsolutions.info and he repaired the EBCM with higher capacity components for just $100 plus shipping. I just put the repaired module on and it works great.
Thanks Gavin.

I've been encountering a few problems lately with my 99z71, which brought me to this site. In hopes of finding out if the things going wrong were unique to my truck, or if there seems to be a pattern of troubles. At any rate, I too had the EBCM go bad on my truck, about a year ago now. So, I'd say there's definately something wrong with that design. And, like the posters before me, the cost for the part alone was in the neighborhood of $1k. That was the first real pinch I felt, but more to come...

Jerry, I have a 2000 gmc sierra had same problem. If you know where your ecbm is there is a red and black wire attached. The black wire is the ground wire. For some reason this wire had a tendency of shorting out. I had to replace the ground wire and my troubles went away. Good luck.

If the black wire shorts out, it will not cause a problem....a ground wire that shorts to ground is a redundant ground.

What you may mean is the wire on your vehicle was open or had high resistance. This would create a voltage drop on the ground side of the circuit and prevent the EBCM from operating properly.

I wonder if anybody has come up with the real failure components?
My wife's car, a Seville STS has needed the Bose amps in all four speakers repaired and also the cd player. In all cases it was caused by failing japanese capacitors. I got the list of bad components from a cadillac forum site and repaired them myself using better quality parts. saving about $300 altogether.
