89 Camaro wont start
okay, so i have an 89 camaro convert. It's an IROC Z28, i believe it has a 305 however stock a 350, it's an automatic. Anyway, i've been driving this car for about a year and it just reached 100,000 miles. and now IT WONT START! It wont even turn over.
I used to have a problem where it would turn over, but wouldn't engage. Well i fixed that and it has a new starter in it. I'm just saying, if anyone knows what else it could be, i'd really really appreciate it. I drove it, let it sit for probably no more then 30 minutes, and now it just wont start. I tried a different key thinking something could've been wrong with the computer, when i get the starter to turn over, it wont engage ((even if you give it gas it still wont..)), i've looked at a lot of the wiring. Just about everything on the car is stock. i don't know what further information you'd need, however if you have ANY ideas at all as to what i can do, it'd be so greatly appreciated. Thanks so much -Ashley Last edited by BlondieAsh; 03-30-2004 at 12:24 PM. |

Re: 89 Camaro wont start
TBI or TPI? (If TBI: Had a problem with my truck, wouldnt even turn over, stuck a screw driver in carb butterfly, and started it right up, now it has a manual choke.) Could be no spark either.

Re: 89 Camaro wont start
are you saying the car turns over and wont start, or the starter turns but the engine doesn't, or it wont turn over at all? i'm a little confused

Re: 89 Camaro wont start
Make sure that all the wires to your starter are on tight. If it's making a ticking or clicking noise then you need a new starter. If there is nothing at all, then it could be a couple of things. Bad starter, possibly bad ignition switch, shorted wire. But more than likely getting a new starter will fix the problem if when you turn the key the starter doesn't turn.

actually that "ticking" noise is usually a misconception of a bad starter, and most of the time can be fixed. what happens is that the starter solenoid is engaging and striking the starter bolt like it should, but the copper bolt gets worn down from thousands of starts. take the starter apart and rotate the copper bolt 180 degrees.

Re: 89 Camaro wont start
I had the same problem not too long ago. When I turned the key it would make one (and only) one noise but no starter action at all. Once I took it out I noticed that one of the screws had a lot of play so I tightened up a few bolts, and had it tested - worked fine. I purchased a new one, as the old one was drawing too much, and reconnected everything. Besure to disconnect the positive (black) wire from the battery before starting.

Re: 89 Camaro wont start
well, i just put a new starter in it probably 2 months ago...i've checked a lot of the wiring and most the bolts..everything looks pretty good.
yea it does just make that clicking noise but it doesn't turn over at all. I'm thinking 4onFloor has a pretty good idea though, so i guess i'm off to try that. Thanks everyone, if you get any more ideas i'd really really appreciate if you'd let me know. -Ashley |
