I originally joined this forum specifically about this problem, which I am having w/ my 2000GAGT. I e-mailed GM, and they told me that there are no open recalls on my vehicle. I am still having a persistent loud clicking inside my dash where my hazards are located, as well as the fact that they work whenever they feel like it( I occasionally check just to see). I am furious that everyone seems to be getting these letters, and I am having this irritating issue that bothers and worries me. I am not sure what to do!!!!......

I refuse to fix this on my own, when I would swear on a stack of car manuals that the problem I am having is the same problem everyone keeps referring to. HELP!

Re: Recieved recall letter today on hazard switch/turn signal problem.
I had the same problem, luckily my GM dealership fixed the problem for free. The problem is not in the switch in the dash board, even though that is where the clicking is coming from. I replaced that switch and it didn't help. The problem is in a short in the blinker located inside the steering wheel area. In order to fix it, the whole switching device must be replace. But beware, when they replaced mine, the new one was shorted out also.. so be sure to check it before you leave the GM lot!.. C-YA

i too have had this problem for about 2 years now, i'm a mechanic, and as a mechanic i can tell you that some things are intentionally designed to malfunction after so long. those things can only be replaced brand new at you local dealership. i don't know what the current status is on the blinker relay, but when i started havin the prob, you can only replace it at the dealership, on a typical car this piece is 99 cents to 8 bucks, the one for this vehicle costs about $90.00. this is something car companies have been doing for years to continue making money. anyway if pounding on the plastic above your hazard switch has ever started to get your blinkers to work properly, my cheap suggestion is to go to staples and buy one of those black paper clips that have the shiny opener spreader handles on each side( find one a little larger than the relay) and slide it from the side on to the relay, and remove the handles this should fix the problem. my relay is green although there are different colors, you can get to it by simply pulling on the plastic face that goes around your radio, it's directly behind the hazard switch. i hope i've helped you solve this problem in a cheap effective manor. |

My problem is with the turn signal/wiper assembly. I replaced the hazard warning switch for $40 and still had the problem. I did sell the used switch on ebay for $25, however. After taking the shroud off around the steering column, I noticed smoke sometimes when I turn my turn signal on. I can lightly touch the turn signal and cause the clicking as well. Unfortunately, there is no recall for any 1999 GA for either of these parts. Was told by the dealership to keep receipts and I can be reimbursed if there is ever a recall.

Hi..I would like to know..if the recall for the turn signals effect the 2000 Grand Am. and in what province...e.g. Ontario..Canada. I have been to two different dealerships and they cant find a problem with my car. I also have a problem with the heater. The heater blows hot air than after awhile starts to blow cold air. This usually happens 20 min. or so into the trip. It is annoying..but the turn signals are worse. You never know when they will fail you. Please let me know.. thanks...
