putting in a new amp

okay, i just got everything put in and i bought an amp and sub. the amp needs me to plug in: Ground, +12volt, and Remote.
I know the remote is the wire for a power antenna, and i hook that up from the back of my headunit. But i have 2 questions.
My headunit is wired through the wiring harness to the ground on the car, do i detach the ground coming out of the headunit from the ground on the wiring harness and hook the ground from the headunit to the ground on the amp? im pretty lost here.
Also, i have 2, 12volt wires going from headunit to wiring harness.
one is 12volt ignition, the other is 12volt battery/memory. so to connect this to the amp, do i leave them (or one) connected from headunit to wiring harness and just attach a wire to run to the amp?
which 12volt should i use?
sorry for all the questions.

EDIT:
incase your wondering its an alpine type R, 12inch sub.
and a sony 2channel amp. im going to bridge it to 1 though for my sub. i dont have any money so i can only work with what i have

Re: putting in a new amp

ok fest of all you are all round on how to hock this amp you.
here is a step by step of how to do it.

1. git a amp weiring kit at lest 8 gage wire
2. start by running your RCA cables from the head-unit to your amp
3. run the remote wire from your head-unit to the amp
4. run your power wire from you car battery+ to the + on the amp
5. run a ground wire from your amp the a spot on your car like a trunk bolt or some sort of good round (scrap off the pant on it first for a good ground)

the only wire you need to touch off the head-unit is the remote..
do not use the power off the head-unit for your amp.

i would highly sagest you find a Friend that knows what he is doing and let him hock it up for you and just look at what he dos and how it all id done

Re: putting in a new amp

okay, how am i suppsed to put a wire onto the + battery cable? i cant quite splice it, should i take off the terminal, put it there and put the terminal back on over the wire?
also, for the ground wire, once again, do i just kind of electrical tape it on there?

Re: putting in a new amp

Get a ring terminal put the wire on the ring terminal attach to screw. ground wire... run that to a close by metal piece near the amp, again use a ring terminal crimped on the end. You might need spade terminals to connect to the amp. I personally just direct connect with wire

ring terminals are your friend, attach them like this

(ignore the blurriness, I was in a hurry )

Your stock battery terminal should have screws in it, just unscrew that, put the ring terminal in, and screw it back down. Same with the amp's ground wire, take out the bolt you're going to use, put the ring terminal on, and bolt it back down.

Re: putting in a new amp

a cable to hook to the battery... you mean a power wire? it is included in the wiring kit. How much power are you pulling amp wise. look at the fuses on the amplifier and add them up. So I can reccomend a guage to go with on the amp kit.
