Help!! Transmission powershifts

Help! Transmission powershifts in all gears, Scan says... EPC pressure jumps to 120% even shows pressure @ idle. Ford says " Not sure, but you need a new Tranny" Thanks alot Ford
Never any codes! (2 complete scans) Went to a local guy, he replaced EPC solenoid, filter, oil, body gasket, he worked for hours, even checked under engine for any ground shorts, he's stumped!
Thinks maybe it's in the computer control...didn't want to spend any more of my money. It not getting any worst in last 3 months ... any ideas... and THANK YOU!! Shall i still drive it till it dies? Drives me crazy!

Re: Help!! Transmission powershifts

What year? Engine size? You say EPC is 120. Is that amps? Pressure? Desired amps? OD light flashing?

Re: Help!! Transmission powershifts

Thanks Rex, 2000 ford explorer Limited, All wheel drive, 5.0L EFI V8, on the ford service receipt it states *"Transmission diagnostics EPC pressure jumps to 120% indicates internal problem possible forward clutch"*, not sure of amps, The local trans guy, did extensive amp check by hand and found no problems. OD light is not on.

Re: Help!! Transmission powershifts

It seems strange that there is no codes. If the computer sees anything out of range it should go limp mode, which is reverse and 2nd gear only. The transmission needs to be shifted with a shift box(that means with no input from the vehicle computer). Then someone would know if its inside transmission or outside(electrical). If EPC is 120 lbs then either the vehicle computer system is commanding it(accidentally, as max EPC commanded is 98Lbs) or there is a problem with the valve body(worn bore, blown gasket, broken springs, also an EPC solenoid can be defective right out of the box). The computer does not command high EPC because of a leaky forward clutch. This transmission is not adaptive.

I think the best thing to do is find a shop with a "TransX 2000" shift box. Or a "schaffer shifter" will do the job if they don't have the other. But, make sure they have one of these or don't even bother talking with them.

Also driving the car with harsh shifts caused by high oil pressure is very bad because it takes oil from the lubrication side of the trans. There is a balance of apply pressure and lube pressure. Take more of one and you have less of the other, basically.

Good luck!

Re: Help!! Transmission powershifts

You could have the vacuum modulator, vacuum and kickdown cable checked. If they are OK, then maybe the governor valve or vavle body is sticking. If a valve is sticking then pretty much time for a rebuild. These(trannys) will start to "hang" valves as the metal and friction material floats around inside the tranny. It is a easily contaiminated tranny.

Also, if the engine is lacking power it can shift late also. Make sure to have the simple stuff checked first...

Good luck
