For the cost replace it, not realy worth welding unlees you can do it or have it done cheap. But then again a weld on the manifolds don't really last most of the time.

Re: Exhaust Manifold...

Also, when i push the petal to the floor, the car makes a sound and hesitates for a second before it takes off. Does anyone know what is wrong? It has just started. My car as 166,000 miles on it, does that have anything to do with it, maybe a part or something?

What kind of a sound when you floor it? Backfiring sound like a pop?

What has been replaced on the car recently?

Can you give us a little more background info?

At first idea, have you checked the timing?

Could be many other things too.

Re: Exhaust Manifold...

The sounds is like a rumbling sound and shakes for only a second and then takes off, but it only does this when i punch it to the floor. If I take off slowly and then punch it does not happen. I resently just changed oil, changed heater core, and belt. Dis. cap was replaced not to long ago. I just put a new K&N air filter in the car bout a month ago. Some backgorund on it is. The car is a 86' Fiero SE with 166,000. The belt breaks every 1,000 to 2,000 miles because of rusted pulleys, but i just bought a set of underdrive pulleys. As you see I also have a cracked mainfold. At first I thought that i let the gas get too low or the sprak plugs or wires becasue i could use new of them too come to think of it. the plugs are good becasue i checked them all, but the wires I looked at them all and found one cut, so I replaced it.

Could be slipping clutch packs, or a bad tranny pump. (The shaking thing) Anyway, that's my best guess.

Re: Exhaust Manifold...

Alright I wil check into that. Thanks...It could probably use a tune up also. So this weekend I am going to put a dis cap, spark plugs and wires to see maybe if that will help.

Would it be a good idea to put headers on the fiero, instead of replacing my cracked mainfold?

The shaking sounds tranny-ish, but then again, if it sounds like the engine running out of gas when you do this, it's probably fuel related. Have you checked the throttle position sensor for a dead spot that would cause the ECU to not see the Closed to Wide Open Throttle change?

I rebuilt a 3.1L V6 myself and the parts and machine shop work cost $1,200. This included cylinders bored over .020 and heads shaved down .005. I replaced the pistons, cam,cam bearings, lifters, pushrods , rockers, and timing chain and gears. My crank was turned down a bit to clean it up and all lower bearings were replaced. I rebuilt the oil pump with a high pressure kit. The rods were fine so I left them as is. (GM v6 rods in general hold up VERY well, rumor has it they're rated for 7000rpm) No changes were made to the fuel system-yet

With labor a rebuild like that I'm guessing would run you $1600-$2000

A decent freshening up, including a head job, re-ring, bearing and gasket replacment would cost under $1000, I assume. This would only apply if the engine was in good, non-abused condition.

Neither of my guesses involved labor for pulling/reinstalling the engine in the car.

Slowing down the water pump on a Fiero is going to overheat it!
