Question 2000 Cavalier dies

My 2000 cavalier died on me while driving down the road. It lost speed like it was running out of gas. The car would run if we would put heat in the car for a few hours then die again. Then it wouldn't run when we done that after a while it but it would start if we would let it cool down. But its not running hot. Now it wont even start. We change the fuel filter in it. I dont think there is water in the gas though. Someone told me it was the fuel pump but they are real expensive and i dont wanna put one on there if thats not what it is. And I can get it to a machic to fix it. Can someone please tell me whats wrong.

Re: 2000 Cavalier dies

well, if you have been running the fuel level down to e alot, then it very well might be the fuel pump. my dad had that problem with his 97 cav...he thought by running it from f to e, he could get the greatest fuel efficiency, but then he learned the pump was INSIDE the gas tank now and needs to be emersed in fuel. if that is the problem, get it fixed and try to always fill up before the needle drops below half, and never let it drop below 1/4

Re: 2000 Cavalier dies

Sounds like the pump, my 92's fuel pump has been making a whining/humming sound for almost two years but hasn't gone yet, if you don't hear any noise coming from the tank with the key on then that's the problem.

The best way to get better gas mileage is to NEVER fill up. Think about it, one gallon of gas weighs 6.2 lbs. An average tank holds 12-14 gallons.

14 gal x 6.2 lbs = 86.8 lbs
5 gal x 6.2 lbs = 31 lbs
86.8 - 31 = 55.8 lbs of weight saved!

Sure you will have to stop more often but not as much as you think, you are saving the motor from hauling around an extra 50-60 pounds. Just stop again at 1/8 tank. Any other weight you can easily remove from the car will help too, the more the merrier. Think how much gas money are you going to save over a year just by eliminating 100 lbs.!
