idle problem

I have a 1987 325is and the idle is giving me problems, if the a/c is on the idle will surge to 2-2500 rpms and will remain there for a while, then wit will drop to 900, to go up again to 2500, only with the a/c on.

Thanks in advance for any kind of help offered to solve this problem
