i have the book, but not a flatbed scanner so please please please can someone scan in the page a little from the back with the f1 roadcar 'blueprints' (look like they are done in blue crayon) i would be very grateful!

also, does anyone have any other kinds of blueprints for the roadcar?

i know about this one http://www.onnovanbraam.com/index.ph...ars&id=mclaren

but thats about it.

thanks!

This is objectionable.

Please refrain from copying images from "Driving Ambition."

The book is copyrighted by McLaren Cars Limited.

Please buy a copy of "Driving Ambition - The Official Inside Story of the McLaren F1".

Copies of the book from the second print run are now readily available.

Gordon Murray.

<assuming it is actually you>

Hello Gordon-
I noticed that this username had been registered some time ago and was wondering if it would ever see any use. I was also quite curious if it was the real deal who had registered the name. Maybe you can silence those who will have doubts with posts later on. I'd assume one photo of the chassis plaque inside XP3 would suffice if you're looking for ideas. Maybe a photo of you with the car - I dunno?

It's unfortunate that your introduction to the forums came on these terms. I understand copyright laws and why you make you made your comment though. You will note that the original poster stated he does own the book already. I have two copies, with a 3rd reprinted version on the way shortly to replace my original copy that is showing signs of wear from overuse. It's an excellent resource - probably the single greatest documentation of a vehicles development process ever published and I would like to thank you and Doug Nye and the rest of the team who put it together. For a McLaren fan like myself and some of the others here, it is just truly spectacular.

Anyway - I hope you won't become a stranger here. We would love to hear your insight on any post you feel deserves comment. You're certainly the most knowlegable resource out there on the F1.

By the way - not to start an argument, as I know you're right - I tend to believe that sharing little pieces of "Driving Ambition" actually increases interest in the book for those who don't have it already - thus generating more sales. I know that in the past, just describing to people the content in the book has left the wanting a copy, but sharing some of the photos pushed them to the point of getting their own.

I'm probably directly responsible for at least 25 other copies of the great book being purchased since it came out.

Just the other day I received this Private Message on another forum I participate on:

Quote:
Just a quick question for you. What's your thought on the price of this copy of Driving Ambition? I've heard things about how expensive these books are going for these days, and this one is about half the price of the other two listed on ebay at the moment, making me think the seller doesn't know it's going rate.

I might have to 'buy it now' for this price...

< INSERT RANDOM EBAY AUCTION LINK >
Here was my response:

Quote:
Looks to be fairly expensive to me. I've heard they are available through Amazon again for $65 USD. That one equals $94 USD with the Buy it Now. I'm not sure where you are located, but I would check Amazon.com before pulling the trigger on that auction.

Good luck - it's really an amazing book. There is no way any McLaren fan would ever be disappointed by it.
Shortly thereafter, I received this reply:

Quote:
I had seen it on Amazon recently, but hearing other peoples comments, I had thought they had just left it on their site for the next printing. Seeing as I've delt with Amazon before with excellent results I'll look into it. I'd rather buy something from a US based store than a guy in England. Seeing as I live on the other side of the world in NZ, should anything go wrong I'd have more luck contacting Amazon.
10 minutes later, another reply:

Quote:
Just ordered it from Amazon. Should be here in around 10 days.

Thanks for pointing out they had it in stock again!

Cheers!
Anyway - that was definitely not the first time I had made that exchange of info with the outcome resulting in a purchase of DA. This request came from someone who's been getting those little bits and pieces of the book that I referred to, posted from multiple sources for quite some time. He finally decided he had to have his own copy.

What nonsensense. It's not Gordon Murray, I can assure you. I have a couple of pieces of correspondence from him, and his writing style is completely different.

Further, it is not against copyright law to have a scanned page from a book you already own.

Actually, it really depends on what is written on the copyright line in the book. I noticed that "Driving Ambition" lists no limitations.

The copyright notice in "Driving Ambition" reads:

"Copyright © 1999 McLaren Cars Ltd."

Beneath that it adds:

"This book is sold subject to the condition that it shall not, by way of trade or otherwise, be lent, resold, hired out or otherwise circulated without the publisher's prior written permission in any form of binding or cover other than that in which it is published and without a similar condition including this condition being imposed on the subsequent purchaser."

What a bunch of nonsense that is. Basically, don't sell the book without the cover. Who the heck would do that?

Inside other books you will find things like:

"All Rights Reserved. With the exception of quoting brief passages for the purpose of review, no part of this publication may be reproduced without prior written permission from the Publisher."

or...

"Nothing in this book may be reproduced in whole or in part without written permission of the Publishers."

or (...and this one is really bad):

"All Rights Reserved. No part of this publication may be reproduced or used in any form or by any means - graphic, electronic, or mechanical, including photocopying, recording, taping, or information-storage-and-retrieval systems - without written permission of the publisher."

It doesn't matter in these cases whether you own the book, or if you won't make any profit off of duplicating it - you are simply not allowed to reproduce it in any form, and copyright laws allow for prosecution if you do for any reason, assuming you don't have the necessary permission.

i think mclaren have better things to do then spend god knows how much on sueing someone for about £50.

copyright laws are strange things, we probably shouldnt even say the word McLaren without having the written consent

I agree - but for the record, they could sue you for a far greater amount than the cover price of the book. Also, it would be the Publisher who would pursue it, not McLaren Cars. Publishers normally have a legal department that is well schooled in these situations.

I think the fact that people have been scanning pictures and posting them on here for years proves that McLaren aren't that bothered!

Re: need someone with driving ambition + scanner

What BS. I'm sure that Gordon Murray, one of the greatest automotive innovators of our time, has nothing better to do than worry about a single circumstance of copyright infringement here on the automotive forums.

Sense the sarcasm?
